Even before Labor Day, it was clear that the Baldwinsville girls tennis team, with strong players on both the singles and doubles side,s, had a reason to feel ambitious as it went into Monday’s showdown with Fayetteville-Manlius.
The Bees took on West Genesee Sept. 2 and, by claiming all but one of the singles and doubles divisions, pulled away from the Wildcats by a 5-2 margin.
WG’s Mikayla Mannara survived a first-set tie-breaker and pulled away from Jennifer Stone 7-6 (7-4), 6-0, but Brooke Tutor made up for it, shutting out Andrea Andreeva 6-0, 6-0 just as Paige Tromblee was putting away Danielle Bertelli 6-3, 6-1.
A three-set doubles classic saw Amanda Coogan and Lauren Devine split the first two sets, but pull it out and beat Meghan Mello and Andrea Wierbinski 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.
Though Yasha Parawar and Riley Warren lost, 0-6, 6-2, 6-2, to Anastasia Mello and Phoebe Nelson, B’ville made up for it. Alina Minkova and Taylor Collado topped Lauren Ferris and Natalie Thurston 6-3, 6-4, while Gabby Fiello and Katherine Cassidy beat Angelina Llanos and Katie Viau 6-2, 6-3.
Nearly a week later, B’ville was set to return to action looking for its fourth win in a row against Liverpool, but it got rained out and is rescheduled for this Friday at 4:30 amid a week where F-M, Syracuse East and Cicero-North Syracuse all face the Bees, too.
In the meantime, the Bees did play last Friday against Jamesville-DeWitt, a non-league affair where it prevailed, 6-1, over the Red Rams.
Tutor began a singles sweep by shutting out Margaret Frank 6-0, 6-0. Stone nearly matched her in a 6-1, 6-0 win over Anna Sofia Hege as Tromblee, getting a bit more resistance, defeated Olivia DeHoog 6-3, 6-2.
A close doubles match saw Collado and Minkova rally past Natalie Alweis and Katie Tzizanis 3-6, 7-5, 7-6. Coogan and Devine lost, 6-2, 6-2, to Maya Pollock and Jungyun Kim, but Cassidy and Fiello romped past Sara Gow and Inka Gajri 6-1, 6-0 as Parawar and Warren got past Sophia Foti and Riya Sharma 6-0, 6-1.
