Though her Marcellus girls golf team didn’t beat Westhill head-to-head on May 16, Mary Colella earned a victory of greater importance when she took home the individual championship from the Onondaga High School League Tournament at Woodcrest Golf Club two days later.
Shooting an 18-hole score of 85, Colella was the lone golfer to break 90 as she beat CBA’s Megan McKeen (91) by six shots. It also helped Marcellus to a second-place team finish with 417, tied with Skaneateles and two shots behind CBA, who won with 415.
The Mustangs’ Hannah Abbott earned a 99 to tie Jamesville-DeWitt’s Lena Jones for sixth place, while Kendall Koloski had a 117, one shot ahead of Erin Haas, and Elise LaBombard had a 122.
Shannon Bunce finished fourth with a 95 to lead Westhill, while Gabbi LoCourto finished with a 97. Westhill’s Angela Vigliotti finished with a 108 as Madeleine Jones struggled to a 120 and Lydia Stevenson finished with a 129.
Plenty of other golf matches took place, too, as everyone rushed to the end of the regular season.
In boys action, Solvay lost last Monday to Cazenovia, 221-248, as Jon Smolen and Conrad Skrupa each shot 48 for the Bearcats at Cazenovia Country Club, ahead of Colby Skrupa, who had a 49. Joe Sardo had a 50 and Noah Campella had a 53, but the Lakers had the four lowest individual scores, led by Cody Thorp, who had a blistering 35.
Then Jordan-Elbridge took its turn against Cazenovia a day later at Millstone, but fell to the Lakers 214-253. Robert Alcock shot a 45, with Max Bondgren adding a 48 as Cole Melfi (50), Nate Melfi and Brad Sullivan (55 each) followed, but Thorp’s 35, plus 44s from Geoff Christiansen and Alex Pezzi, helped Cazenovia pull away.
As that went on, Westhill rebounded from the Marcellus defeat, topping Solvay 217-244 at Camillus Country Club. Individually, David Bleskoski and Alex Marshall both shot a 41 for the Warriors to edge Smolen (42) for the top spot, while Dadey had a 43. Mullen and Laszlo both shot 46.
Yet the Warriors could not sustain that momentum, taking a narrow 209-210 defeat to Skaneateles on Wednesday at CCC.
Sean Dadey was the top individual with a 36, four shots better than the Lakers’ Sam Clymer, while Bleskoski had a 41 and Jared Zion added a 42, but three Skaneateles golfers – Carter Stiegel (41), Jacob Patalino and Luke Palmer (42 each) – finished at those totals, allowing them to make up the early deficit.
Marcellus won, 206-227, over J-E on Thursday at Millstone, even though Alcock matched Frank Szczech for the low individual round of 39. Jay Colella (40), Nick Sonnacchio and David Bosak (42 each) made sure the Mustangs got away as Carter Austin added a 43. Nate Melfi had a 43 for the Eagles ahead of Bondgren (45) and Cole Melfi (47).
To wrap up its terrific season, Marcellus shot 208 to top Skaneateles (216) and Solvay (254) in a three-team match at Pine Grove on Friday. Tom Fiacchi shot a 38, the same as the Lakers’ Jacob Patalino, while Tim Sheridan had a 39 and Colella a 40. Smolen’s 46 beat Colby Skrupa (48) and Conrad Skrupa (49) for the Bearcats.
Back in girls golf, West Genesee got a second chance to upend undefeated Fayetteville-Manlius last Monday afternoon, but like the April 27 match at Westvale, this rematch at Green Lakes went in the Hornets’ favor, this time by a 198-236 margin.
Among individuals, F-M’s Audrey Putelo won a tight race for medalist honors, shooting 47 for nine holes to beat out WG’s Mikki Riley, who had a 49.
But the Hornets’ depth took over again as Maggie Bonomo and Justine Burress each shot 50, with Elizabeth Truman and Bailey Wallace adding matching rounds of 51 ahead of the Wildcats’ second-best effort, a 60 from Juilana Burns. Maddi Vertucci added a 63 and Kara Kallfelz finished with a 64.
WG then lost, 196-250, to the other top Class A side from Auburn on Wednesday afternoon at Westvale. Burns shot a 59, leading Kallfelz (62), Riley (63) and Megan Kavney (66), but they all trailed Maroons stars Lindsay May (41) and Maggie Lesch (43), who were the top individuals by a wide margin.
