Following its 10-day hiatus, the undefeated Jamesville-DeWitt girls tennis team went right back to dominating all OHSL Freedom division challengers, including a near-perfect effort in last Tuesday afternoon’s 7-0 shutout of the Chittenango Bears.
All three of the doubles matches had 6-0, 6-0 endings. In order, Peter Hatton and Robert Dotterer stopped Keoni Saturnie and Zach Falkenburg, with Ishan Gajra and Alex Tso handling Matt Lanphear and Holden Lalor as Dan Frank and Dhruv Thota blanked Trevor Crystal and Devin Hodges.
Up in singles, two other matches ended with 6-0, 6-0 decisions thanks to David Benaroch beating Aaron Norman and Ethan DellaPosta doing the same to Zed Weigand. But Tyler Glowaki and Harshal Nanavati did surrender games – one apiece, with Glowaki beating Sean Austin 6-1, 6-0 and Nanavati topping Chase Gordon 6-0, 6-1.
Then J-D blanked Phoenix 7-0 on Thursday, with Glowaki, DellaPosta, Tyler Lux and Somil Aggarwal dropping just two games in eight sets of singles play. In doubles, the teams of Gajra-Tso, Benaroch-Zach Ripich and Thota-Harshal Nanavati didn’t lose a game in any of their matches.
Of course, Fayetteville-Manlius hasn’t lost to a Section III foe since 1998. Though matches against Baldwinsville and West Genesee were rained out last week, the Hornets made up the B’ville match on Saturday and, preserving its shutout with a pair of three-set doubles wins, handled the Bees 7-0.
No stress was found in singles, where Taran Judge handled Ryan Shirk 6-1, 6-0 and Tom Miro roared past Liam Wicks 6-0, 6-0. Though it took a bit longer, Michael Miller gained a 6-2, 6-2 sweep over Chris Fuller.
Moving to doubles, that’s where the excitement took place. Vince Sorrentino and James DeSorbo squandered an early lead, but still beat Nick Walker and Chris Dotto 6-2, 4-6, 6-1, and the same thing happened in third doubles, only to greater extremes as Joel Fafrella and Dilan Judge won big, lost big and ended up with a 6-1, 1-6, 6-1 win over Alex Shaban and Sam Damato.
The other two doubles matches proved easier, with Ravi Dhawan and Vince Grasso stopping Mason Soeder and Scott Ferrari 6-3, 6-2, with Rohan Dhawan and Richard Wang earning a similar 6-2, 6-3 win over Dan Watkins and David Rush.
Manlius-Pebble Hill took a 4-1 defeat to Westhill last Tuesday afternoon, notching its only point in singles when Charlie Mann beat Andrew Doner 6-2, 6-2, but two other matches went to three sets after Keerthi Martyn’s 6-4, 6-4 defeat to Jackson Bradley.
Trilok Reddy led in first singles, but could not hold on in a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 defeat to the Warriors’ Sabastian Ramirez. Meanwhile, in second doubles, Zhao and Jeff Bush also led early and also saw Westhill come back, falling to Noah and Ryan Rolince 3-6, 6-2, 6-1.
As a follow-up on Thursday, MPH turned around and blanked LaFayette 5-0, seeing Reddy, Mann and Martyn surrender just two games in their six total sets of singles play. In doubles, Zhao and Bush prevailed, 6-3, 6-2, over Jack Grass and Lexi Harrington, with Jerge and Max Ward also prevailing.
East Syracuse Minoa gained one point from Thursday’s 6-1 defeat to Chittenango, doing so in doubles, where Anson Cheng and John Pontillo beat Matt Lanphear and Ben Cyr 6-3, 6-4. Kelvin Cheng and Bryant Pham went to a second-set tie-breaker in a 6-1, 7-6 (7-5) defeat to Keoni Saturnie and Sean Austin, while in the closest singles match Brandon Jones went to three sets, but lost to Devin Hodges 6-2, 6-7 (7-5), 6-4.
Bishop Grimes played Thursday and took a 5-0 defeat to Onondaga, forfeiting three of the matches. Michael Insel did compete in singles for the Cobras, falling to Dan Kelly 6-0, 6-4 as Zach Schell fell to Ryan Cass 6-0, 6-0.
