Though not in the same league, the Skaneateles and Auburn boys tennis teams still would get together to determine some local bragging rights last Tuesday afternoon.
Here, the Lakers did not get on the board in singles, but more than made up for it with a doubles sweep that produced a 4-3 victory over the Maroons.
Dan Judge nearly broke up that singles run from Auburn, unable to hold on to an early lead in a 4-6, 6-1, 6-4 defeat to Luke Parker. Connor Driscoll fell to Jack Farrington 6-1, 6-4 as Ethan Weldon ran into the Maroons’ singles star, Scott Minnoe, and lost 6-0, 6-0.
Everything was different in doubles, though, where Skaneateles did not drop a set.
Connor Jones and Matt Benson got it rolling with a 6-1, 6-4 victory over Trevor Bohannon and Dan Clark. Ryan Bailey and Malcolm Lombardi reversed those scores, but beat Connor Davia and William Clark 6-4, 6-1.
The other matches were even more lopsided as Anthony Panasci and Jack Lawson rolled past Quinn Hukee and Henry Foresman 6-1, 6-0, with Nick Glaza and Matt Oliver getting a 6-0, 6-0 shutout over Nate Wawro and Austin Duger.
When Skaneateles went back into OHSL Liberty division competition on Thursday afternoon, it did so against Cazenovia, and despite more doubles success, it could not break through in singles and lost the Laker duel by a 3-2 margin.
This was a rematch of the April 13 showdown that Skaneateles claimed by that same 3-2 margin when it did earn a singles point. Here, though, that didn’t take place, with Benson falling to Fabian Grimm 6-2, 7-6 (8-6) as Judge lost to Mason Stehle 6-4, 6-1 and Weldon again dealt with a tough first singles foe in a 6-0, 6-0 defeat to Nate Romig.
Skaneateles still claimed both of the doubles points, with Jones and Panasci rallying from a terrible start to beat Nick Bama and Orson Sproule 1-6, 6-4, 6-3. In the other doubles match, Bailey and Lombardi paired up to beat Brady Flannery and Tim Kempton 6-1, 6-4.
