Yet another big local showdown awaited each of Baldwinsville’s cross country teams during last Wednesday’s trip to Auburn, where the Maroons proved easy to tame – but Cicero-North Syracuse was another matter.
In the girls race, B’ville had much the same narrative, rolling to a 22-39 victory over Auburn, but not quite able to keep pace with C-NS (no. 18 in the state Class A rankings) in a 23-33 defeat.
Justus Holden Betts ran quite well, getting to second place in 19 minutes, 57 seconds, just behind C-NS’s Annina Marullo, who won in 19:52, but Holden-Betts was the lone B’ville competitor within the top five, while the Northstars saw Emily Dembrowski finish third (20:07) and Sarah Davis (20:09) get fifth place.
Elizabeth Fawwaz, in a time of 20:59, made her way to sixth place, while Mia Bolton was ninth in 21:38 and Nadine Dickter (21:45) took 10th place. Auburn’s best runner, Maritza Cruz, finished fourth in 20:24.
Moving to the boys race, B’ville would get a clean sweep over Auburn 15-50 before making its way to New York City – or, more specifically, Van Cortlandt Park in the Bronx – for Saturday’s Manhattan Invitational.
In the boys Varsity B race, Ryan DeLola, Austin Bolton, Andrew Olds and Cameron Morrissey all had top-20 finishes. DeLola took 13th place in 13:23.6, with Bolton 16th in 13:30.3 and Olds getting to 18th place in 13:34.8, one spot ahead of Morrissey (13:37.3) in 19th place.
Just behind them, Adam Davis, in a clocking of 13:46.9, finished 31st, while Denis Keegan took 46th place in 14:06.9 and Ethan Craig, in 14:11.1, finished 51st.
Meanwhile, in the girls varsity A race, Holden-Betts rose to 10th place, her time of 15:31.5 just behind Voorhees’ Lauren Wagner (15:31.3) among ninth graders and not far from the winning 14:54.1 posted by Mamaroneck’s Lauren Chapey.
Continuing to run well, Fawwaz finished 21st, in 16:01.7, while Kelley Hull took 50th place in 16:48.9. Carpenter, in 69th place (17:11.7), was two spots ahead of Mia Bolton’s time of 17:14 flat, with Sophie Simone 76th in 17:22.8 and Dickter getting 79th place in 17:28.5.
