Through two contests, the Baldwinsville girls swim team is 1-1, having succeeded at home but unable to repeat that magic elsewhere.
In the Sept. 9 season opener at the Baker High School pool, the Bees did just enough to fend off a challenge from Fayetteville-Manlius, beating the Hornets by a score of 49-45.
A week later, B’ville ventured out, this time to face Cicero-North Syracuse at its home pool at Le Moyne College. Despite some success in both individual races and relays, the Bees could not keep up on the points scale and lost a 96-82 decision to the Northstars.
B’ville did open well, winning the 200 medley relay. Lauren Burchill, Amanda Johnson, Noelle Staso and Erin Mordaunt paired up to post a time of 2:00.49, edging out C-NS’s top relay side (2:01.05) by less than a second.
Staso, Johnson and Burchill would all go on to win individual races. In the 100 butterfly, Staso posted 1:05.40 to prevail as Mordaunt, in 1:09.81, finished fourth.
Earning her title in the 100 backstroke, Johnson, in a time of 1:05.62, kept the Northstars’ Brooke Fedi (1:06.08) from catching her, right before a 100 breaststroke where Burchill didn’t get challenged and prevailed in 1:16.87.
To close the meet, Johnson, Staso, Mordaunt and McKenna Redmore swam in the 400 freestyle relay and claimed first place in 4:14.92.
Staso was second in the 200 individual medley in 2:20.71, just behind Fedi (2:18.98), while Johnson was third in the 100 butterfly. Grace Smith took second (1:01.87) to Sarah Walter (58.00 seconds) in the 100 butterfly as Alyse Baker got third in the 500 freestyle. Lauren Thorne led C-NS with titles in the 200 freestyle (2:08.24) and 500 freestyle (5:33.13).
B’ville had another meet on the road next week, visiting Oswego on Wednesday night.
