West Genesee’s top tennis players, including Brent and Garrett Boleslav, began their post-season odyssey by venturing to Syracuse University’s Skytop Courts for the Section III Class A tournament early this week.
And the Boleslav brothers won the first doubles title, preventing Fayetteville-Manlius from a clean sweep of all five divisions by not dropping a set in any of their three matches.
As the top seed, Brent and Garrett turned back Jack Farrington and Brian Franceschelli (Auburn) 6-1, 6-1 in the quarterfinals and then handled Aaron Laviolette and Evan Maestri (Liverpool) 6-0, 6-1 in the semifinals. The title match also required just two sets as the Boleslavs topped F-M’s tandem of Taran Judge and Chris Lansing 6-1, 6-4.
Meanwhile, in second doubles, WG’s tandem of Connor McGuigan and Aaron Wierbinski were the top seeds. McGuigan and Wierbinski beat Jude Renzi and Jacob Roux (Watertown) 6-1, 6-0 and then rolled past Alex Haessig and Noah Wells (Oswego) 6-1, 6-2 in the semifinals, only to run into F-M’s James DeSorbo and Vince Sorrentino in the finals and take a 6-4, 3-6, 6-2 defeat.
In singles play, WG had Nick Bentley fall in the opening round to F-M’s Josh Druger 6-0, 6-0. Parker Ventura lost his opening-round match to Baldwinsville’s Mason Soeder 6-0, 6-1 as Pat Copeland dropped his quarterfinal to Charles Hyland (Fulton) 6-2, 6-0.
Meanwhile, Westhill and Marcellus went to Utica’s Mott Courts for the sectional Class B tournament, finding modest success.
In first doubles, the Warriors’ Brian Sheridan and Matt Zabycz beat Ben Condit and Garrett Reagan (Cortland) 6-3, 6-3 as the Mustangs’ Ian and Noah LaFever lost, 6-1, 6-0, to Jamesville-DeWitt’s Ishin Gajra and Alex Tso.
Sheridan and Zabycz conquered Steve Castellini and Tommy Daviau (CBA) in a 6-4, 5-7, 6-4 quarterfinal classic. Running out of steam in the semifinals, Sheridan and Zabycz met Gajra and Tso and lost, 6-0, 6-1.
Also for the Warriors, Ballard Ballard and Noah Rolince, playing second doubles, beat Yilmaz Ates and Rafael Rondon (Carthage) 6-2, 6-0 before a 6-1, 6-0 quarterfinal defeat to Oneida’s Andrew Palmer and Brad Vrooman. Colin Catone, in third singles, lost to CBA’s Jameson Keppeler 6-3, 6-0.
Steve Larison, playing second singles for Marcellus, beat Tom Reynolds (Carthage) 6-1, 6-4 in the quarterfinals, but lost his semifinal to CBA’s Greg Maziuk 6-2, 6-0 before claiming third place in a consolation final over J-D’s Josh Rothenberg. The Mustangs also had Andrew Kammer play in first singles, falling to Oneida’s Sean Spooner 6-1, 6-2 in the first round.
