For the second time in as many weeks, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team met up with Skaneateles with a championship at stake, and got the better of the Laker duel.
The girls followed up on the boys victory in the Onondaga High School League Division II meet by claiming its own title Thursday night at Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, Cazenovia earning 141 points to get away from Skaneateles, who was second with 118 points.
This time around, Cazenovia nearly swept the field events. Again, Ashley Kent led the way, claiming the long jump with a leap of 15 feet 5 ½ inches to hold off Hannibal’s Kiersten Abbott, who was second in 15’2 ¾”.
Then, in the triple jump, Kent had a top attempt of 32’6 ¼” and won there, too, over Skaneateles’ Angela Krause, who went 32’1”. Molly Carges was fourth in the long jump (14’ ¼”) and Caeli Carroll went 28’10” in the triple jump to finish fifth.
Meanwhile, in the shot put, Sarah Haley finished on top, her throw of 29’4 ¾” more than three feet ahead of Tully’s Ally Snyder (24’11”). And in the pole vault, freshman Katie Robbins cleared 8 feet to topple Skaneateles’ Keely Gregg (7’6”) and prevail.
Only in the high jump did Cazenovia not get a victory, but Tori Fischer was third, clearing 4’8” as Jessica Macheda (4’4”) slid into fifth place. Fischer topped 7 feet to finish third in the pole vault behind Robbins.
Moving to the oval, eighth-grader Clara Rowles won again, in the 1,000-meter run, her time of three minutes, 19.39 seconds part of a 1-2 sweep as Rowles edged out Grace Milmoe, who finished second in 3:19.64.
Samantha Gates joined, in, too, as the senior ran 600 meters in 1:50.84, well clear of Faith Heritage’s Charlotte Matzal (1:53.03), the runner-up, as Zoe Shephard took fifth in 1:54 flat.
