Post-season action has now begun for the area’s high school wrestling teams, including Saturday’s Section III Class AA championship meet at Baldwinsville, where CBA/Jamesville-DeWitt finished in third place and Fayetteville-Manlius was seventh.
Overall, CBA/J-D had 166.5 points, behind a close race at the top where Liverpool (239 points) edged Baldwinsville (238 points) to win the sectional crown. F-M had 77 points.
Tristan Broddus, with more than 100 career wins on his resume, won for the Hornets at 145 pounds. Broddus beat Victor Elias (West Genesee) in a 15-0 technical fall, outscored Sam Candee (Baldwinsville) 21-10 in the semifinals and, in the title bout, pulled away from Candee’s teammate, Brian Rush, in a 21-6 technicall fall.
In the 99-pound bracket, CBA/J-D’s David Griffin beat Garrett Bauer in a 15-0 technical fall in the semifinals, but lost in the title bout to Cicero-North Syracuse’s Travis Harrington 9-4. Bauer finished third, edging another C-NS wrestler, David Ciciarelli, 6-5 in the consolation bracket final.
Dan Knapp’s pin of Nahjir Dean (Institute of Technology Central) in 1:13 put him in the 182-pound final against West Genesee’s Dalton Elias, but Knapp lost a 9-2 decision to Elias.
At 113 pounds, Tyler Kellison won a wild 13-8 match over B’ville’s Kevin Lewis to finish third. Moving to 132 pounds, Jonah Cavallo lost in the semifinals, but recovered to top ITC’s Kelson Howard 7-4 and also land in third place, while Ethan Palmer (195 pounds) made it to third place by pinning another ITC wrestler, Esrayel Flowers, midway through the second period.
Aaron Gucciardi finished fourth at 106 pounds, while Dustin Harris got fourth place at 126 pounds and Luke Rowe (160 pounds) landed in fourth place, too. Shane Smith beat Justin Marullo (Auburn) 7-4 for fifth place at 120 pounds.
Jake Wright blanked F-M’s Jackson Delmarsh 3-0 and ended in fifth place at 145, just where Nolan Barth landed at 220 pounds. Ramy Guindy gained sixth place at 285 pounds.
Aside from Broddus, F-M also saw Joe Falcone win three consolation bracket-matches to get third place at 120, edging B’ville’s Tyler Patrick 10-8 for that third spot.
Ben Nosovitch, at 106, beat Liverpool’s Christian Bradshaw 11-4 to finish fifth, with Jack Kinsella (126) topping C-NS’s Jacob Hall 9-2 for his own fifth-place effort and Muhktar Qubaisy (182) beat Liverpool’s Jack Ragonese 5-1 to get to fifth place. Zach Colon was sixth at 113, with Bryce Doane sixth at 152 pounds.
East Syracuse Minoa took part in the sectional Class A tournament at Fulton, where it earned 77 points to finish seventh in a nine-team field and the host Fulton Red Raiders (256.5 points) pulled away from Carthage (186 points) to prevail. No Spartans wrestler was able to reach the finals.
