Much of the penultimate week of the regular season for each of the Skaneateles varsity basketball teams involved practice, but no games.
The pair of varsity contests scheduled between the Lakers and Altmar-Parish-Williamstown twice got postponed – first on Monday by snow that closed schools everywhere in Central New York, then again on Friday when more snow hit Oswego County and kept the Rebels from traveling.
On the girls side, more bad weather that closed school at Skaneateles on Thursday postponed a trip to Phoenix – but that got made up on Saturday afternoon, and when it did, the Lakers clinched a winning record for the regular season, improving to 10-6 by beating the Firebirds 62-48.
Having not played for nine days since a 62-48 victory over neighbor and rival Marcellus on Jan. 29, the Lakers were eager to get going again – as Phoenix found out during a first quarter when Skaneateles ran hard on both ends and made baskets.
That built a 24-12 lead, but the Lakers were far from satisfied, cranking up the defense and extending the margin on the Firebirds to 41-20 by halftime. More strong play early in the second half created a 57-33 margin before Skaneateles backed off in the latter stages.
All 10 Laker players that saw action got at least one field goal. Elizabeth Lane led the way, earning 15 points, while Olivia Dobrovosky picked up 11 points and Bailey Herr added 10 points.
Shannon Foehl wasn’t far behind, contributing seven points as Hannah Atkinson and Breanna Sisson had six points apiece. Kelsey Kraetz, Emmeline Graham, Chloe Metz and Maddy Pickney each made a basket, too, as Samantha Doupe (15 points, seven rebounds) and Jessica Carter (13 points, 17 rebounds) led Phoenix’s efforts.
The APW girls game will get made up Friday, two days after the boys game is replayed, and after the Skaneateles girls take on Homer and Solvay, with the boys taking on Solvay and Phoenix before finding out where it will be going for the Section III Class B playoffs.
