During the first full week of 2015, the Cicero-North Syracuse boys swim team competed twice, splitting those meets, but getting plenty of fine efforts in individual races and relays along the way.
To start its week, the Northstars had to visit Oswego, and despite winning all three relay races, the Northstars lost, 95-82, to the Buccaneers.
Nate Ancona, Payton Connors, Scott Cooley and Zach Dengos began the C-NS relay sweep when they took the 200 medley in 1:56.09. Cooley returned to help James Dwyer, Matt McAndrew and Chris Perotta take the 200 freestyle relay in 1:46.21, and in the closing 400 freestyle relay, Ancona, Dwyer, Scott Cooley and Steve Cooley won in 4:03.36.
In between all of that, though, Oswego won most of the individual events, though Dengos did take the 200 IM in 2:22.98, holding off the Bucs’ Ben McCrobie (2:23.91) to do so.
Connors was third (1:09.28) and Owen Ukeyla second (1:09.16) to Oswego’s Chris VanGorder (1:08.36) in the 100 backstroke, with Dengos (1:10.12) and Scott Cooley (1:11.09) right behind the Bucs’ Christian Davis (1:09.16) in the 100 breaststroke. Oswego also saw Evan James (200 freestyle, 500 freestyle) and Dylan Harrington (50 and 100 freestyle) win two races apiece.
Back at Le Moyne College on Friday night, C-NS handled the combined Syracuse city squad 98-85 for its second win of the season to improve to 2-4 overall.
Dengos went 2:05.92 to win the 200 freestyle, after which he claimed the 100 butterfly in 1:03.80, edging out Ancona (1:04.84) for that top spot, both of them in sectional-qualifying times.
Ancona rebounded by swimming the 100 backstroke in 1:07.40, just ahead of Connors (1:07.68) and Ukeyla (1:09.37). McAndrew was fastest in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:16.26. Eli Ward (134.60 points) and Caleb Fassett (125.30 points) posted the top diving scores.
Steve Cooley’s 50 freestyle win in 25.20 seconds over James Dwyer (25.40 seconds) was followed by Scott Cooley, in 56.83 seconds, holding off Dwyer (57.42 seconds) in the 100 freestyle, this after Scott swam the 200 IM in 2:33.95.
Ukeyla and Ancona joined the Cooley brothers as C-NS tore through the 200 medley relay in 1:55.63, with Scott Cooley helping Dengos, McAndrew and Dwyer finish first in the 200 freestyle relay in a clocking of 1:43.33.
