What was supposed to be the busiest home stretch of the regular season for the Skaneateles boys soccer team got curtailed a bit.
In fact, the most important of the Lakers’ three home games in five days never got started. Lightning entered the area just before the warm-up of last Tuesday’s showdown with Cazenovia.
When the bad weather persisted, officials had no choice but to postpone the game until Oct. 13, Columbus Day, which will kick off at 7 p.m.
It couldn’t get pushed back 24 hours because Skaneateles had two more contests at Hyatt Stadium that it had to attend to right away, against Cortland on Thursday night and Homer on Saturday afternoon.
In the first of those encounters, the Lakers roared past Cortland 5-0, quickly going in front thanks to goals from Sam Clymer and Francis Lombardi. When Briggs Carter found the net, Skaneateles had a 3-0 edge going into halftime.
The Lakers’ depth was on display throughout the night, and climaxed in the second half with two more goals from two other players – Andrew Weiss and Cullen McGlynn. Eli Goodell, Jack Kimm and Nick Palmer got credit for assists.
Amid much cooler conditions, Homer visited on Saturday afternoon, but the different conditions brought the same result – a shutout, Skaneateles defeating the Trojans 3-0.
Homer hung in there for quite a while, only trailing 1-0 at halftime. But the Lakers got away in the second half as, again, production was spread around.
Not only did Goodell, Max Messie and Jack Bailey net the three goals, three others – Nick Palmer, James Motyl and Dylan Viscomi – earned assists. And though the Skaneateles defense got tested plenty, Billy Patrick turned away all seven Trojans shots he faced.
Now at 8-2 on the season, Skaneateles hosts a big rematch with Westhill on Tuesday after beating them 4-0 back on Sept. 10. Then comes back-to-back games against Rochester McQuaid on Thursday and Jordan-Elbridge on Friday – in short, three games in four days, all of them leading up to the Columbus Day clash with Cazenovia.
