Fresh off another big effort at the Maine-Endwell Invitational on Sept. 27, the Skaneateles girls cross country team would relax a bit while taking a tour of its famed Polo Grounds.
The state Class C no. 3-ranked Lakers met Altmar-Parish-Williamstown last Wednesday afternoon and handled the Rebels 20-42, while the Skaneateles boys side made it a sweep by earning a 25-32 victory over APW.
In the closer boys race, Cooper Watt was in top form, covering the Polo Grounds course in 17 minutes, 54 seconds, nearly half a minute ahead of APW’s Sage Bartlett, who was second in 18:18.
After the Rebels’ Brandon Sebelowitz took third (18:25), Skaneateles took over, starting with Steve Ciaccio, who made it to fourth place in 18:35, beating out teammate Kai Soderberg, who was fifth in 18:38.
Though APW’s Joe Karobski was sixth (18:53), Joe Capozza helped out the Lakers, getting to seventh place in 19:24, with Dominic Grasso eighth in 19:33. And it was Alex VanRiper locking up the win for the Lakers as he gained 10th place in 20:07.
In the girls race, Skaneateles, knowing a showdown with the likes of Elmira (who beat Fayetteville-Manlius in the Sept. 27 McQuaid Invitational in Rochester) and Jessica Lawson-led Corning loomed in this Friday’s Newark Valley Invitational, eased back and made sure it got the points it needed for a team win.
Content to run together, the Skaneateles girls trio of Finan Malcolm, Julia Willcox and Liz Dwyer each covered the Polo Grounds course in 22:12, trailing APW’s Brianna Kabroski, who won in 21:18, but building a comfortable lead.
Kaitlyn Neal ran together with Jillian Van Leer, and each finished in 22:48 to help the Lakers wrap up the team portion. Natalie Condon was seventh, in 23:38, while Makena Gorman got ninth place in 24:39 and Jenn DeRosa, in 25:15, would gain 10th place.
