Members of the Cazenovia Tree Commission, assisted by local volunteers and certified arborists, planted five new trees on the Green on Emory Avenue this past weekend as part of the commission’s ongoing efforts to maintain and improve the scenic beauty, health and environment of Cazenovia.
The new trees — one red oak, two Kentucky coffee trees, one tulip poplar and one American linden — were purchased using money donated to the village. The planting was a cooperative effort between the village and the town, since the town owns the green and the village maintains the green.
“I’m particularly excited about today because it is a town and village collaboration, and it’s a great example of shared services,” said Trustee Amy Mann, who also serves as village tree commissioner. “I’m also excited about the turnout because of the younger kids included — it’s a chance to educate the next generation.” Some of the planting volunteers included Cazenovia High School students.
The five trees were planted along the edges of the Green — not in the middle — and were chosen because they will grow to a large height and can be seen by all local residents, said Tree Commission member Ted Bartlett. “This is part of a long-term plan for the Green,” he said. More new trees will be planted as the older trees die, he said.
“People notice this stuff … our work is well received — people are so happy and so positive about trees,” Bartlett said.
