It didn’t take long for fickle weather to interrupt the fall sports season – or specifically, the girls tennis showdown between Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool.
A forecast of heavy rains (which did arrive in the early evening) postponed last Tuesday’s match between the Warriors and Northstars, but the rest of the week’s action was unaffected.
That included Thursday’s tense match between C-NS and Central Square, where two doubles matches that went to three sets helped push the Northstars past the Red Hawks 4-3.
One of those matches was in second doubles, where Alyssa Forte and Ellen Iaconis worked through three close sets to stop Jenna Froio and Maddie Perry 6-3, 4-6, 6-4. Then, in fourth doubles, Megan Tryinski and Brenna Duffy played their best in the third set during a 6-4, 5-7, 6-2 win over Kari Woodard and Allyson Kuhn.
Elsewhere, Kristin Inthirakot and Bethany Wicks pushed past Nicole Bishop and Alyssa Payne 6-1, 6-2. Hanna Costello lost in singles to Erin McCarthy 6-1, 6-2, with Madison Murphy falling to Brianna Grimes 6-2, 6-1.
C-NS had started its season the week before, on Aug. 28, rolling past Syracuse West 7-0.
Neither Brooke Murphy nor Madison Murphy dropped a game in their 6-0, 6-0 singles wins over, respectively, Jessica Hodell and Sophia Kinne, while Paige Carter beat Kamira Nowlin-Flagg 6-3, 6-0.
As part of the Northstars’ doubles sweep, the teams of Forte-Iaconis, Inthirakot-Wicks and Kelly Salmons-Karah Savage dropped just four games in eight sets.
Liverpool also won its opener with relative ease, taking out Syracuse East 7-0 on Aug. 29. Katey Padden, Rachel Foster and Anna Abgett each won their singles matches in straight sets, with the doubles teams of Alexandra Ioaniddis-Chloe Foster, Julie Pento-Julie Stagnitta and Megan Reilly-Kristin Glor all getting their points through two-set wins.
And the Warriors made it 2-0 last Wednesday, beating Syracuse West in another 7-0 shutout. Rachel Foster battled in singles past Kinne 6-4, 7-5, while Padden stopped Hoddell 6-1, 6-2 and Chloe Foster beat My Huyen Tran 6-0, 6-2. The four doubles matches featured just two games dropped in eight combined sets.
C-NS had its own match against Syracuse East on Friday, winning by a 6-1 margin. Costello beat Quynh Le 7-5, 6-1, and Murphy shut out Eve Llanos 6-0, 6-0, while Murphy took a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Yen Linh Le. But the Northstars swept all four doubles matches, the closest one coming when Wicks and Inthirakot won, 6-3, 7-6 over Mei Lin Luzadis and Anhtu Nguyen.
