Through four games, the Cazenovia field hockey team is not just undefeated, but it’s gaining an aura through the way it has beaten its opponents.
Following back-to-back 3-0 wins over 2013 Section III Class A finalists Fayetteville-Manlius and Cicero-North Syracuse on Labor Day weekend, the Lakers moved into Onondaga High School League play and really cranked up the goal-scoring volume.
Cazenovia visited Homer Wednesday night and tormented the Trojans from start to finish, getting to double digits in a 10-0 shutout victory.
Rachel McLaughlin set a career mark, pouring in five goals, half her team’s output. Sarah Willard contributed three assists to go with her pair of goals, while Zoe Shephard notched her first goal of the season, joining Gabby Yates and Maria Stalder with single tallies. Defender Meredith Shephard added an assist.
Then the Lakers had its home opener at Burton Street Elementary School against Cortland on Friday afternoon and managed to match what it did against Homer, again getting to double figures and again winning by a 10-0 margin.
Quiet for most of the opening week, Ashley Kent roared back to life in this game with a three-goal hat trick, something that McLaughlin matched. Yates contributed a pair of goals as Willard and Stalder notched the other goals. Sarah Liddell and Zoe Shephard earned single assists.
Cazenovia would get a week to bask in that 4-0 start before East Syracuse-Minoa, the reigning sectional Class B champions, arrive at Burton Street this Friday in a key showdown to determine early Onondaga High School League supremacy.
