The Van Buren Town Board met Aug. 19 for a brief session to discuss and act on the following items.
The Seneca Knolls year seven drainage project was awarded to Liverpool-based JJ Lane in the amount of $181,777. The board received bids that ranged from JJ Lane’s base bid up to $286,450.
The board, joining the village of Baldwinsville and the town of Lysander, declared Tuesday, Aug. 26, 2014 as Julia Goodwin day in the Greater Baldwinsville Community, recognizing Goodwin’s accomplishments on the T.V. show, “America’s Got Talent.”
Per the town’s request, the speed limit on East Sorrell Hill Road between Connors and Hoag roads has been reduced to 40 mph. The county Department of Transportation will install signs soon.
Sen. John DeFrancisco’s office has secured a $50,000 grant for the town for phase three of the Downer Street sidewalks.
Residents passed 49-5 the two propositions the Northwest Fire District put up for vote Aug. 5. The first proposition was to purchase various fire safety and personal protective equipment as well as breathing apparatus and communication systems. The cost is not to exceed $703,769. The second proposition was to purchase a new 2,000 gallon pumper truck at a cost not to exceed $370,000. Taxes will increase accordingly.
Superintendent Claude Sykes said he received a letter from the Onondaga County executive that the severity factor of this past winter was 33.3 percent, which means the town will be reimbursed an additional $84,088 for plowing county-owned roads. According the meeting minutes, Sykes said this is not a windfall, rather the money will help defray the costs of the previous winter.
The board will next meet at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 2 at Town Hall, 7575 Van Buren Road in Baldwinsville.
