Following a successful regular season, Cazenovia’s boys golf team tried to find some more magic when it went to the Links at Sunset Ridge for Monday’s Section III Large School West Division Championship.
With a team total of 438, the Lakers settled into third place, trailing runner-up Westhill (429) by nine shots and Skaneateles, who backed up its undefeated run through the OHSL Liberty division by prevailing here, too, with 419.
Individually, two of Cazenovia’s players stood out. Cody Thorp and Charlie Schaffner both shot rounds of 82, which helped them finish in a tie for ninth place, though far from the winning score of even-par 72 posted by Westhill’s Nate Meisner.
As a result, Thorp and Schaffner both advanced to the Section III state qualifier, which started on Thursday and would end Saturday at Colgate University’s Seven Oaks course. The top nine finishers in that event will play in the May 31-June 2 state tournament at Cornell University’s course.
When Cazenovia’s girls golf team ventured to Kanon Valley Country Club for its Section III Division II tournament a day later, it shot 452 to finish in second place, just behind Marcellus, who took team honors with 438.
Maddie Ellithorpe shot a 104 to lead the Lakers, with Erin Howles one shot back at 105. Sam Quarantillo managed a 112, with Kelsi Fredericks and Maleigha Ellithorpe both posting 118.
Chittenango’s lone individual golfer, Meghan Gearity, shot a 94, finishing just six shots out of the top nine that advanced to the state tournament June 14-15 at SUNY-Delhi as Auburn’s Larissa Carter, with a two-over-par 75, repeated her individual title from 2013.
