After all the team honors it had accumulated, the Cazenovia girls indoor track and field team was now left to pursue individual glory.
So the Lakers went back to Onondaga Community College’s SRC Arena, where it won the Section III Class B and OHSL Liberty titles, Wednesday night for the Section III state qualifier, aiming to earn spots in next Saturday’s state championship meet at Cornell University.
Liz Pittman, in particular, made a strong bid for the state meet. In the pole vault, Pittman cleared 9 feet, finishing fourth overall as just two competitors, Abby Uczen (West Genesee) and Hannah Shankman), fared better, each of them clearing 9’6”. South Lewis’ Christina Platt also cleared 9 feet, but with fewer misses, and finished ahead of Pittman in third place.
Pittman also competed in the triple jump, where she went 31’3” to take 10th place, just ahead of Ashley Kent, whose best leap was 29’11 ½”. Christobel Ezidiegwu (Fayetteville-Manlius) won with a best leap of 36’4 ½”.
Clare Costello competed in the 300-meter dash, making her way to seventh place in a time of 44.54 seconds, with Liverpool’s Ore Akinpelu taking the title in 40.33 seconds. Costello also got a time of 7.77 seconds in her heat of the 55-meter dash, but was unable to reach the finals.
Jeanette Cudney took her shot at the 3,000-meter run, where in a time of 11 minutes, 28.72 seconds, she finished 11th overall. F-M’s Alana Pearl won the race in 10:08.32.
