When 22 Onondaga High School League indoor track and field teams were split in two for Wednesday night’s league championship meet at SRC Arena, Jordan-Elbridge went to Division 2 and Solvay to Division 1 – and both went to the top of the standings by the time the meet was done.
In Division 2, the Eagles picked up 104 points, with Tully (69 points) edging out Skaneateles (66 points) for second place. Meanwhile, in Division 1, the Bearcats, with 82 points, held off Jamesville-DeWitt (78 points) to win, with Westhill/Bishop Ludden (43 points) settling for sixth place.
Dylan Whittico would win twice for J-E, taking the 55-meter dash in 6.97 seconds, the only sub-seven second standard in the race, and then going 1:26.01 in the 600-meter run to pull away from CBA’s Jack Brower (1:29.91) and the field.
Jack Gugel ran to a top time of 9:54.81 in the 3,200-meter run and then paired with Austin Milton, Jacob Patterson and Nate Hollis to win the 4×800 relay in 8:54.45, more than 19 seconds ahead of runner-up Hannibal (9:13.72).
Hollis, on his own, cleared the only height in his league in the high jump, winning with 5 feet 6 inches, while Patterson topped 9 feet and won the pole vault to go with his third-place finish in the 300-meter dash (39.64 seconds). Zach Rink was second (9.10 seconds) to CBA’s Tommy O’Connor (9.00 seconds) in the 55-meter hurdles as Milton finished third in the 1,000-meter run in 2:53.25.
Tyler Jackson got second place in the long jump with a leap of 17’6 ¾”. J-E also managed finishes of fourth in the 4×200 relay (1:46.16) and fifth in the 4×400 relay (4:05.84) as Whittico, Rink, Gunner Ferris, Ethan Kinney and Pat Fordyce took part.
Solvay, for its part, knew every point was important in the OHSL Division 1 meet and relied on its stars, especially Nick Cometti, to pull out the team title.
Cometti, in the finals of the 55 sprint, went 6.76 seconds to hold off Mexico’s Kyler Fenton (6.81 seconds) at the line, with teammate Owen Ryan seventh. Then, in the 300, Cometti finished in 38.37 seconds to beat out J-D’s Zach Liebmann, who was second in 38.52 seconds.
Eric Goodrich, who was third in the 300 (39.05 seconds), also won, in the 600, putting up a time of 1:27.77, just ahead of Fowler’s Adam Raacha (1:28.51) as Westhill/Ludden’s Vincenzo Carr finished fifth in 1:33.27.
Not content with that, Goodrich went to the 4×200, where he teamed with Ryan, Isaiah Lee and Garrett Lee for a victory in 1:39.11, a full second clear of Homer (1:40.13) and the rest of the field. Westhill/Ludden gained fifth place in 1:45.41.
Isaiah Lee went 39’9 ¾” in the triple jump, second behind Fulton’s Mike Holcomb (40’6”), with Ryan (36’10 ¾”) taking fifth place. Josh Marotti got to third place in the 55 hurdles in 8.87 seconds and also was third (11’6”) in the pole vault. Garrett Lee was third in the long jump, going 18’10 ¾” as Westhill/Ludden’s Tyler King (18’6”) was fifth.
Anthony Pecoriello gave Westhill/Ludden a victory in the shot put, as his top throw of 46’4 ¾” was more than four feet better than Fowler’s Jermine Wimple (42’2 ½”). Solvay’s Frank Pucello (41’10 ¼”) and Jacob Hook (39’10 ½”) were fourth and fifth, respectively, with Peciorello’s teammate, Eddie Kernan, in sixth place (38’9”).
Westhill/Ludden also had Josh Owens finish second in the 3,200 in 10:32.43, with Marcellus’ Steve Larison in sixth place (12:07.14). Kyle Fitch got fourth place in the mile, edging out the Mustangs’ Pat McGuane, 2:47.97 to 2:48.45. Alex Stopen gave Marcellus a sixth-place finish (4:56.66) in the mile.
Jake Etoll, Tom Howard, Chris Pullano and Franco Tangredi helped the Warriors finish third in the 4×400 relay in 3:59.41, with Solvay (4:02.21) in fifth place. Marcellus had its best finish in the high jump, where Noah Townsend tied for third, clearing 5’6”, as Mike Abbott (10’6”) and Tom Dailey (10 feet) were fifth and sixth, respectively, in the pole vault.
Up in the CNY Counties League National division meet, West Genesee, with 45 points, finished fifth in a six-team field. Liverpool (135 points) edged Fayetteville-Manlius (129 points) for the top spot.
Ejay Harrell managed the Wildcats’ lone victory, in the high jump. Both Harrell and Liverpool’s Mark Vanmarter cleared 5’10:, but Harrell did so with fewer misses and took the title.
Harrell also was fourth in the 55 sprint (6.98 seconds) helped Nate Conroy, Sean Relyea and Eldon Hard finish fourth in the 4×400 in 3:44.23. Conroy grabbed fourth place in the 600 in 1:28.01, just ahead of Logan McAnulty (1:28.35) in fifth place. Relyea took fifth (36’11 ¾”) in the shot put.
David Leff was fourth in the 3,200 in 9:48.39. Jack Erhard was fourth (2:40.04) and Kal Strickland sixth in the 1,000, while Sean Beney ran the mile in 4:36.58 and took fifth place. Jackson Powell was sixth in the 55 hurdles in 9.33 seconds. Erhard, McAnulty, Beney and Strickland were third in the 4×800 in 8:22.70, with the Wildcats also sixth (1:42.91) in the 4×200.
