Back from a runner-up finish in the Dec. 14 General Brown Dual Meet, the Baldwinsville wrestling team was, despite the nearness of the holiday season, not in a giving mood as it ventured to Fayetteville-Manlius on Wednesday night.
On the contrary, the Bees were only interested in taking victories – and it took plenty of them, including pins in nearly half of the 15 matches, on the way to drubbing the Hornets 56-18.
F-M was in first place in the CNY Counties League American division thanks to a win over Central Square earlier in the month, but it didn’t get close against the National division-leading Bees.
Connor Ross took a forfeit in the 120-pound opener, after which David Rush, at 126 pounds, earned the first fall, over Liam Welling.
Close defeats followed in the next matches, including a 138-pound classic where two superstars, Kevin Paul and Paddy Quinlan, squared off, and Quinlan prevailed 8-4. Patrick O’Neill (132 pounds) also lost for B’ville in a 4-2 decision to Jordan Nelipowitz.
From there, though, the Bees would win seven of the next eight matches to assume full control. The decisive spurt began at 145 pounds, where Connor Ross fought past Luke Rufo 12-5, and continued at 152 pounds with Chad McArdell taking 1:44 to pin Tristan Broddus.
Continuing this surge, John Petrelli (160 pounds) earned a technical fall over Sean O’Bryan, with Devon Buyck following up at 171 pounds as he pinned Chris Dobrzynski midway through the second period.
Joe Nasoni, who earned his 100th career victory at the General Brown Duals, added to that win total at 220 pounds by pinning Jake Okun in 90 seconds, right after Gunnar Sutphen (195 pounds) finished off Chris Bortel in the third period. It took just 1:06 for Marcel Penfield (285 pounds) to pin Mike Boshart as Josh Peck, at 113 pounds, closed out the meet with a pin over Joe Falcone.
B’ville would go from there to an appearance Saturday in the Phoenix Round Robin Tournament – where F-M was competing, too, as was the likes of Liverpool and Central Square.
