Even with a string of victories from the likes of Ashley Kent, the Cazenovia girls track and field team could not quite reach the top spot in last Monday’s Onondaga High School League Liberty division championship meet at Chittenango High School.
Cazenovia finished with 114 points, but it was the other Lakers, from Skaneateles, prevailing with 136 points exactly one week after Cazenovia beat them in a May 6 head-to-head meet. Marcellus was third with 88 points.
A reliable source of points dried up when Ashley Winn was unable to finish the 100-meter dash final with a pulled hamstring and missed the rest of the meet, but Cazenovia nearly made up for it by how it performed elsewhere.
Kent edged Skaneateles’ Raenah Campbell, 16.84 seconds to 16.89, in the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. Then she won the triple jump, going 31 feet 7 ¼ inches, while teammate Liz Pittman (31’4”) got second place and Chittenango’s Krissy Roberts (30’3”) was third.
Pittman won the pole vault, the only athlete to clear 8 feet, as Glenna Kehelan (7 feet) tied for fourth. Jeanette Cudney, in 11:14.72, grabbed second place in the 3,000-meter run and added a fourth (5:04.72) in the 1,500-meter run, with Mya Walters fifth in 11:46.07. Malone Gabor took third (8:08.81) and Adrien Owens fifth in the 2,000-meter steeplechase.
In the 4×100 relay, Kent and Pittman, teaming with Jess Macheda and Julia Raleigh, got second place in 54.56 seconds to Skaneateles, who won in 53 seconds flat. Evelyn Wells, Bailey Forrett, Maria Stalder and Megan Stanford were third (4:27.73) in the 4×400 relay, this after Stanford, Cudney, Maureen Milmoe and Colleen Stalder needed 10:08.17 for third place in the 4×800.
Lizzy Bigsby earned 2,198 points in the pentathlon, second to Phoenix’s Haylie Virginia (2,615), while Bella Wheeler (1,545 points) finished fourth.
Elsewhere, Pittman also took third in the long jump, going 14’8 ½, while Tori Fischer, clearing 4’6”, was second in the high jump. Hannah Dain was fifth in the discus (79’11”) and seventh in the shot put. Stanford took fifth (1:13.76) in the 400 hurdles as Stalder finished sixth (1:06.91) in the 400-meter dash.
Chittenango’s Sarah Moon was sixth in the 1,500, 800-meter run and triple jump, with Caity Foster tying for fifth in the high jump. The Bears were fifth in the 4×800 in 10:43.07 and sixth in the 4×100.
During the boys OHSL Liberty meet, Cazenovia earned 21 points, ninth in the 10-team field. Cameron Braathen got eight of those points, finishing fourth in both the shot put (42’8 ¼”) and discus (124’6”), while Nick Petroff cleared 10’6” for third place in the pole vault.
Tyler Dunkle went 18’4 ½” for fifth place in the long jump, but did better in the 4×100, where he, combined with Petroff, Ryan O’Herin and Alex Devine, ran to third place in 47.88 seconds. Devine was eighth in the 200.
Chittenango’s Isaac Czarnecki was sixth in the 3,200-meter run in 10:39.17, where Cazenovia’s Sean Satchwell finished eighth. Czarnecki, Kenny Galbraith, Jon Roberts and Lucas Rogers were fifth in the 4×800 (9:05.88) as the Bears’ Rob Howard was seventh in the 400 sprint.
