An active and important week for both of Baldwinsville’s track and field teams included the boys side hosting the 15th annual John Arcaro Relays at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium and the girls making a big impression during Saturday’s Marcellus-Skaneateles Invitational.
At home, the boys Bees won several events and picked up 102 points, topping everyone except Cicero-North Syracuse, who claimed the title with 155 points.
In the distance medley relay, Alec Peinkofer, Jack Martin, Brennan LaQue and Antonio Martinez posted 11:05.91, leaving West Genesee (11:16.28) and the field far behind them.
Dan Walker, Nate Wicks, Jeff Mahar and Brian Mahar were victorious in the 1,000 sprint medley in 2:03.85, pulling away from C-NS (2:07.21) at the end.
In the 2,800-meter relay, Peinkofer, Wicks, Josh Perez and Andy Fleming won in 7:13.54, nearly 20 seconds clear of the field, with Walker, Martin and the Mahar brothers second (3:46.76) to C-NS (3:45.09) in the 1,600 sprint medley.
Perez (10:10.3) and Fleming (10:19.8) went 1-2 in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to win that event in a combined 20:30.1, a full minute better than second-place Holland Patent. Tom Ancilotti, Pat McNamara, Matt King and Mike Yorkey, normally throwers, won their own unique 4×100 by running to a time of 51.35 seconds, edging C-NS (51.43 seconds) at the wire.
Logan Maar and Drew Molinet cleared 20 feet between them, but with more misses than South Jefferson, so the Bees finished behind the Spartants in the pole vault. McNamara and Ancilotti got to third place (205’4”) in the discus relay, while King and Kirk Anderson were second (combined 73’10”) in the 28-pound weight throw.
B’ville was fourth in the mile relay (21:03.59), 4×100 (47.56 second), 4×400 (3:50.99) and 4×800 (9:15.5) relays, plus a fourth in the shot put and fifth in the high jump thanks to Shawn Calnan clearing 5’8”. The Bees were fifth in the triple jump and sixth in the long jump.
Sam Smith made his way to the runner-up spot in the pentathlon, his 2,205 points only trailing C-NS’s Morgan Austen (2,726 points) as Smith’s teammate, Harrison Warner, was sixth.
A day later, when the B’ville girls team made it to the Skaneateles-Marcellus meet, Mackenzie Ross posted the fastest 800-meter time of the Section III season, winning that race in 2:17.91, more than seven seconds ahead of the field.
Cierra Allen added another victory when she sped through the 400 hurdles in 1:09.18, exactly one second better than West Canada Valley’s Mikey Maxwell (1:11.18) at the top. Allen, Katie Wicks, Marissa Lathrop and Angelica Tomasello would combine to win the 4×400 relay, their time of 4:12.35 more than 14 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Elsewhere, Rachel Miller was third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:59.74, with Annie Peterson seventh. Marissa Lathrop (1:00.83) and Katie Wicks (1:03.35) were fourth and fifth, respectively, in the 400-meter dash, with Emily Thompson roaring to third place in the 3,000-meter run in 11:28.23.
Hannah Wood took fifth (17.53 seconds) in the 100-meter hurdles final and Meghan Hull was fifth (8:09.48) in the 2,000 steeplechase, ahead of Julia Johnson in eighth place. Angelica Tomasello was sixth in the 200-meter dash.
In field events, Emily Soeder was fourth in the high jump, clearing 5 feet, while Lauren Fisher tied for fifth in the pole vault. Carlie McNamara was fifth (80’9”) in the discus and 10th in the shot put as Melissa Voyer took fourth in the triple jump (32’3 ¾”) and eighth in the long jump.
This followed a pair of close and exciting meets last Wednesday against C-NS. In both cases, the Bees would fall to the Northstars, including a narrow 71-70 defeat in the girls portion at Pelcher-Arcaro Stadium.
B’ville won two of the three girls relays. Tomasello, Allen, Gabby Jordan and Ashley Pesano beat C-NS in the 4×100 relay in 51.3 seconds, while Ross helped the Bees win the 4×800 in 10:12.1.
Jordan claimed a pair of sprints on her own, getting the 100-meter dash in 13 seconds flat and taking the 200-meter dash in 27.7 seconds. Allen went from a winning time of 1:00.3 in the 400-meter dash to getting first place in the 400 hurdles in 1:07.0 as Ross needed 2:25 to win the 800-meter run.
The boys meet saw B’ville fall to C-NS 77-64, mostly done in by the Northstars winning a majority of the sprint and field events.
Peinkofer would claim two distance races, though. He claimed an outright 800-meter victory in 2:03.5 and ran together with Andy Fleming in the mile, both finishing in 4:47.3.
Jeff Mahar contributed a title in the 400-meter dash, blazing to a time of 50.6 seconds. In the pole vault, Brian Mahar prevailed, clearing 11 feet, while Calnan took the high jump by topping 5’6”. C-NS got double wins from Joe Castaldo (shot put, discus) and Mark Broughton (100 and 200 sprints) to finish on top.
