Liverpool’s girls volleyball team put together an impressive performance in last Tuesday’s match at 9-1 Oswego, never letting the Buccaneers get comfortable and earning a 25-13, 25-16, 25-20 sweep.
Right from the start, Jen Stonebarger was sharp, eventually gaining 23 assists, plus four aces, four kills and two digs. Jenna Bush also had four aces, adding six digs.
Emily Flohr, with six kills, led a well-balanced front line where Sam Wolf and Alexis Hasper both had five kills. Katie Rowell backed up her four kills with a team-best eight digs as Gabby Gould also picked up four kills.
As for Cicero-North Syracuse, it was back on the court Thursday night, wasting little time putting Nottingham away as it swept the Bulldogs 25-10, 25-6, 25-15.
More than a set’s worth of points – 26 in all – came through aces, nine of them by Gabby Nicolini to set the tone. Amy Van Hoven had five aces, plus five kills, while Lindsey Silfer had three aces and seven assists. Elizabeth Miles had four aces and six kills as Kelsey Hess and Jess Dorran each picked up six assists.
In boys volleyball, C-NS and Liverpool both had a light schedule, with the boys Northstars sweeping the Syracuse city squad 25-14, 25-18, 25-11 last Wednesday night in its only league meet of the week.
Justin Collins set the tone with 20 assists and five aces. Up front, Morgan Austen led with seven kills, while Nate Tyrrell picked up six kills. Robert Palucci had four aces and three digs, with Andrew Bocyck and Aaron Storie each earning three kills.
Liverpool would take a tough five-set defeat to Central Square on that same night. After winning the opening set 25-15, the Warriors lost the next two sets 25-21 and 25-15, and though it survived a tough fourth set 28-26, it could not quite complete the rally, falling 25-23 to the Red Hawks in the final set.
In defeat, Dalton Horton picked up 26 assists, while Joe Kenney had a team-best seven kills. Anthony Calabrese got 10 digs and Brandon Corp contributed eight digs. Ronnie Reynolds (19 kills) and Sam Fox (34 assists) led Central Square’s effort.
The Warriors also lost to Horseheads 25-17, 25-18, 25-17 on Friday night, a match where Kenney had seven kills and Horton contributed 10 assists. Corp and Calabrese joined Kenney as they each posted five digs.
