Nicole Chenet wants to spread the word – about breast cancer.
“One in three women in the CNY community will get breast cancer,” said the 28-year-old who not only had a benign lump removed from her breast in 2009 and now goes for regular mammograms, but also lost her friend, Traci Morey Zimmer, last year to the disease.
“Traci was a dear family friend who passed away following a battle with breast cancer,” Chenet said.
As a result, Traci served as Chenet’s inspiration and drive to host her first Rally for the Cure event last year.
“I knew that I wanted to do something to honor her memory,” she said.
Chenet will continue to honor her friend’s memory this year during her second annual Rally for the Cure event, an 18-hole golf tournament to be held Saturday, Sept. 22, at Radisson Greens in Baldwinsville. Using a scramble format, registration for the event is $100 and will begin at noon followed by a 1 p.m. shotgun start.
“Participants can expect prizes, challenges on the course and more,” Chenet said. “We’ll have food, beer and a lot of fun.”
A cocktail reception will follow the event.
“We will be having fun while educating people about breast cancer – and we’ll even have some survivors there to speak, which is a huge honor,” Chenet said. “We also celebrate our loved ones, friends and neighbors who have passed away following a battle with breast cancer through memorial hole sponsorships.”
As Rally Ambassador, Chenet is passionate in her mission to educate people about breast cancer.
“Information is a powerful tool – and early detection can save lives,” Chenet said. “The more people in our community that are aware of this, the better we will be.”
Proceeds from the event will benefit Rally for the Cure, an offshoot of Susan G. Komen for the Cure, as well as the Traci Morey Zimmer Memorial Fund. Last year’s event raised $900 for the local chapter of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
“We opt to keep our funds local because I feel strongly about helping the women and families living in our area,” Chenet said.
