Traffic stopped at the corner of Fayette Street and Highbridge Road in Manlius Tuesday morning, as village firefighters and DPW employees worked to save a baby duck that had fallen into the sewer.
“You could hear the duckling squawking,” said Robert Dwyer, a resident of Limestone Garden Apartments who witnessed the event. “The mother duck was up there with two ducklings by the storm drain on the sidewalk.”
Manlius firefighters located the duckling using a small video camera on a wire, and a DPW employee climbed into the manhole, using two wooden boards to keep the duckling from swimming away, Dwyer said.
“The DPW guy came out with the duckling in his hand and let it loose,” he said.
Dwyer said that when the baby duck and mother were reunited, they touched beaks and waddled away.
