More than a week of inactivity ended for the Skaneateles boys tennis team when it played in an April 28 tournament at Baldwinsville. Ryan Sayko won the first singles division, beating Oswego’s Austin Demott in the finals in straight sets 7-5, 6-2.
And after that, it got crowded, the Lakers playing four times in six days and going 3-1 during that span.
League play resumed last Monday, against Homer, where the Lakers needed points in both singles and doubles to get past the Trojans 3-2.
Sayko handled Jorge Martinez 6-2, 6-3, while Ethan Wilcox continued his singles dominance, blanking Scott McLaughlin 6-0, 6-0. Will Bersani lost a 6-1, 7-6 decision to Patrick Kiernan.
Needing one point in doubles, Skaneateles claimed it when Kevin Goetzmann and Jamie Roney got past Bob Chambrone and Hao Chang Chia 6-1, 6-3. Matt Carroll and Griffin Walawender lost to Ian Heath and Matt Schrader 6-3, 6-2.
It proved close again on Wednesday, against rival Marcellus, but a clutch point in doubles pushed the Lakers to beat the Mustangs by that same 3-2 margin.
Carroll, now teamed with Matt Kallas, went to a third set in their doubles match against the Mustangs’ Kyle McVey and Mike Raymond. Pulling through, Carroll and Kallas won 6-4, 4-6, 6-2, negating the 7-6, 6-4 defeat Goetzmann and Roney took against Shane Barner and Andrew Herold.
Up in singles, Wilcox continued to roll, handling James Garzia 6-2, 6-0, with Sayko getting a 6-3, 6-0 win over Dan Martin. Bolton lost to Sean Dunn 6-1, 6-1.
Skaneateles made it three straight wins on Friday, handling Westhill 4-1. Sayko and Wilcox teamed in doubles to sweep Dan Chang and Brian McMullen 6-0, 6-1, while Goetzmann and Roney flew past Ryan O’Connell and Pat Wickersham 6-4, 6-3.
In singles, Kallas lost in straight sets, but Carroll worked his way past Dan Haynes 6-4, 7-6, with Bersani getting a 6-3, 6-0 sweep over Jake Kinsella.
This stretch concluded Saturday with a rematch against Marcellus, but this time the Mustangs claimed the 3-2 victory as the Lakers fell to 7-2 on the season.
Marcellus turned one doubles match around when Goetzmann and Roney lost to Raymond and Herold 6-4, 4-6, 6-2. Wilcox, back in singles, smashed James Garzia 6-1, 6-2 as Sayko topped Dan Martin 6-1, 6-1 and Will Bolton lost to Sean Dunn 6-1, 6-0.
