Jamesville-DeWitt’s boys volleyball team entered the Section III Class B playoffs with a chance to upend perennial power Vernon-Verona-Sherrill – and nearly pulled it off.
In the first set of Tuesday night’s semifinal match, the Red Rams pulled out a tight 26-24 decision over the Red Devils, only to surrender that advantage when VVS easily won the second set by a 25-15 margin.
J-D completely turned that around in the third set, prevailing 25-15. Again, though, it could not sustain that momentum, VVS again seizing control in the fourth set and winning it 25-14.
The final set proved as close as the first as, at the end of a two-hour clash, the Red Devils prevailed, 25-22, ending J-D’s season.
On the back line, Mike Alfieris managed 24 assists and eight digs, with Max Freeman adding 19 assists. The Rams had a well-balanced front line where Jesse Evensky led with 11 kills, while Max Bregande and Tom Lukow each added 10 kills.
Lukow starred on the defensive end, too, earning 24 digs as Terrance Smith got nine kills, three kills and three digs, and John Williams managed six blocks and three kills. Brad Siegel had eight digs.
For VVS, Bobbie Mumford led with 27 assists, while Josh Albro had 15 assists. Alex Rose managed six kills, 12 digs and two blocks.
