The Consul is an opera in three acts which tells the story of Magda, a woman attempting to obtain paperwork permitting her to join her freedom-fighter husband in another county. Magda’s world is confined by a closed consul’s door, a desperately sick child, and a husband separated from her by political injustice and bureaucracy. Menotti, whose extensive body of work also includes Amahl and the Night Visitors, was awarded the Pulitzer Prize and a New York Drama Critics Circle award for The Consul. In 2007, Menotti passed away at the age of 95 in Monaco.
Directed by Sam Helfrich, Glimmerglass Opera’s production of The Consul will feature Melissa Citro as Magda, mezzo-sopranos Leah Wool and Joyce Castle as, respectively, The Secretary and The Mother, tenor John Easterlin as The Magician, baritone Michael Chioldi as John Sorel, and members of the company’s 2009 Young American Artists Program. Sets will be designed by Andrew Lieberman, costumes by Kaye Voyce and lighting by Jane Cox.
“Glimmerglass Opera’s 2009 production of The Consul promises to be a highlight of the Festival Season,” said Don Marrazzo, Director of Casting & Artistic Operations for the company. “Menotti was one of the most20prolific opera composers of his time, and, with our production of his riveting work The Consul, we honor the life, the career, and most importantly, the music of Gian Carlo Menotti.”
