Winless in the 2011 portion of its schedule, the Skaneateles girls ice hockey team saw its fortunes turn once the calendar flipped over to 2012.
The Lakers’ first victory of the season arrived on Saturday, at Canton, where it would fight its way to a 4-2 victory over the Golden Bears.
A Skaneateles offense that had struggled all season displayed its improvement here, scoring in every period. The Lakers inched ahead 2-1 in the first frame and, after a second-period exchange, blanked Canton in the final period and tacked on an insurance goal.
Madison Singler led the way, scoring twice, while Sophie Kush picked up one goal and one assist. Claire Michel also found the net as Madison DuBeau, Erin Ganley and Morgan Mathews got one assist apiece. Amanda Lupo, playing in goal, stopped 22 of the 24 Golden Bears shot she faced.
This followed Friday night’s 3-3 tie with Massena. Up 1-0 through one period, the Lakers saw the Red Raiders pull even, 2-2, in the second periods, and they exchanged goals in the late stages before a scoreless overtime period.
Michel found find the net twice, Ganley picking up the other goal. Singler, DuBeau, Kush and Sarah Sauda each had one assist, Lupo picking up 26 saves.
Skaneateles would look for back-to-back wins at Ithaca on Wednesday before a long-awaited return to Austin Park Pavilion Friday night and a game against Albany Academy.
