Though it always thought itself to be the top team in the Section III Class AA ranks, the Baldwinsville wrestling did not get irrefutable proof until the second week in February.
Taking care of the first part last Tuesday night, the Bees clinched the outright CNY Counties League National division regular-season title with a 44-21 victory over the West Genesee Wildcats in Camillus.
Never trailing, B’ville won the first four matches, starting at 160 pounds, where Sean Hennigan claimed a forfeit.
Andrew Giromini then took the mat at 171 pounds and pinned Nick Marco in 2:36. Corey Buyck emerged at 189 pounds to finish off Dillon Goldman in a scant 21 seconds, while Kyle Sheridan (215 pounds) put together a 7-0 shutout of Peter Schoeneck.
WG would win the next three matches to get close, including Nick Jacobs (119 pounds) taking a narrow 7-6 loss to Jon Fetterolf.
B’ville shook that off, though, as Anthony Finocchiaro, moved up to 125 pounds, pinned the Wildcats’ Brett Henderson in 1:42 before Tim Hamm (130 pounds) shut out Jason Fitch 9-0.
Keeping it up, Cookie Caloia (135 pounds) pinned Mike Young 44 seconds into the third period, while Antonio Peck (140 pounds) fought his way past Erik Krohl 4-2. Nate Russell (152 pounds) ended the night by beating Sean Clary 15-5.
