The Skaneateles girls track and field team recorded many strong efforts during last Wednesday’s Tully Spring Break Invitational, with Christie Barnett standing out.
First, Barnett worked her way to victory in the 400-meter dash in a time of 1:02.4, edging past Connie Torres (Liverpool) by four-tenths of a second.
Moving on, Barnett went to the 400-meter hurdles and found more success, winning in 1:08.5 as she was the lone competitor to break the 1:10 mark in this race. Barnett also finished third in the 100-meter high hurdles in 17.8 seconds.
Skaneateles gained second place in the sprint medley relay in 4:32.6 as CBA (4:19.6) won and broke its own school record. The Lakers were also third in the 4×400 relay in 4:18.9.
Caroline Walton finished second in the discus, tossing it 90 feet 4 inches, while Madison Eckles claimed second in the pole vault as she cleared 9 feet.
Moving on, the Lakers went to Saturday’s Jordan-Elbridge Invitational, where Barnett — and her teammates – again made a big impact, including a sweep of the relays.
In the 400 hurdles, Barnett improved her time to 1:07.52 for another big win. She then went to the 800-meter run and, in a time of 2:24.3, set a new J-E track record while beating the Eagles’ Nicole Darling by 1.3 seconds.
Rachel Hosie, Bea Walton, Grace Vanderven and Amanda Gray paired together in the 4×800 relay as the Lakers, in a clocking of 9:48.3, built a margin of 11.1 seconds over second-place Baldwinsville.
Over in the 4×100 relay, the Lakers’ quartet of Victoria Sakal, Carley Baulick, Kaela Fuitar and Cassie Berg recorded a time of 53.2 seconds to beat Mexico (54.6 seconds) and the rest of the field.
To cap off the relay sweep, Walton, Berg, Vanderven and Gray got together and, in the 4×400 relay, won in 4:18.2.
Sakal, on her own, was second in the 100-meter dash in 12.8 seconds and third in the 200 (27.0 seconds), while Eileen Ford took second in the 400-meter dash in 1:02.5 and sixth in the triple jump.
Eckles went to the top in the pole vault, clearing 9 feet, as Caroline Walton threw the discus 86 feet 4 inches for third place. Vanderven was fourth in the long jump
In boys action, Skaneateles claimed the 4×400 relay, just like their female counterparts, its time of 3:36.32 just enough to get past Tully (3:36.83) at the wire.
Sean Cooper, part of that winning relay effort, worked his way to second place in the 110-meter high hurdles in 16.13 seconds, an event where Phoenix’s Mitchell Switzer broke the 15-second mark — 14.92 seconds, to be precise.
Patrick Rooney earned third place in the 400 hurdles in 59.1 seconds as Oswego’s Ryan Taylor (57.7 seconds) won with another new track mark. He also got third in the triple jump, going 40 feet 5 3/4 inches. Calvin Davis was third at 800 meters in 2:05.6.
Brae Kriever won the long jump, going 20 feet 1/4 inch, half a foot clear of Canastota’s Alex Lang. Kriever also was second in the 200 (23.43 seconds), combined with Xander Edwards, John Turose and Tim Lewis to take fourth in the 4×100 relay in 47.2 seconds. Turose cleared 10 feet for third place in the pole vault.
