CENTRAL NEW YORK – Even though weather caused numerous interruptions the Marcellus girls tennis team would make it to the semifinals of the Section III Class C team tournament.
Yet just like its neighbors from Skaneateles, the Mustangs’ run would end at the expense of top seed Cazenovia, who prevailed Thursday in a 7-0 decision.
Marcellus got to this point by topping no. 5 seed General Brown 4-2 in Tuesday’s quarterfinal match, with two points in both singles and doubles.
Shaelyn Kelly earned the key point, trailing her first singles match with the Lions’ Holly Fuller and then coming within two games of defeat before beating Fuller 2-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Xian Angiotti won in two sets over Molly Vassallo 6-4, 6-1, while in doubles Anna Aupperle and Emma Dilmore rolled past Evangeline Camidge and Marley Stein 6-1, 6-1. Katie Devereaux and Adeline Kinsley earned a 6-2, 6-4 win over Elleigh Pierson and Raegan Sharp.
Skaneateles, meanwhile, had to wait out playing its quarterfinal against Cazenovia until Wednesday, when it dropped this latest Lakers showdown by a 6-1 margin.
Eva DeJesus won in first singles 6-3, 6-1, over Leah Bell, which Cazenovia countered by having Madden Cobb beat Addison Zieler 7-5, 6-0 and Nora Berg top Katie Danforth 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles, Madelyn Vance and Makayla Barron nearly won the opening set, but still lost 7-5, 6-3 to Katie Williams and Claire Vaccaro. Georgia Kriedler and Livy Lovenguth fell to Lila Campagna and Ava Galton 6-2, 6-0.
The other doubles matches saw Millie Wu and Lily Bennett run into Audrey Henry and Charlotte Rushing, taking a 6-1, 6-4 defeat as MaryKate Holst and Addy Pavlus lost to Bailey Burns and Claire Henry 6-4, 6-1.
When Marcellus got its turn against Cazenovia, just one of the matches went to three sets as Devereaux, paired with Zofia Piorkowski, extended it against Campagna and Galton, only to take a 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 defeat.
Aupperle and Cailtlyn Sammon played two close sets but lost to Burns and Claire Henry 6-4, 7-6 (7-1), while Kelly and Abby Finn fell to Claire Vaccaro and Katie Williams 6-3, 6-4. Kinsley played the closes of the three singles matches, a 6-2, 6-4 defeat to Nora Berg.
