In past years, a snowstorm such as the one that beat up Central New York on April 14-15 might have forced the West Genesee boys lacrosse team out of game action.
But with its new artificial surface, school crews were able to clear out all the snow (some of it melted, too) in time for the Wildcats to take the field last Tuesday night against the Oswego Buccaneers.
Unable to practice for a couple of days, and running into a hot goalie, WG took a while to get going, but it still rolled past the Bucs 12-3.
Controlling the faceoffs, the Wildcats spent the majority of the game in Oswego’s end, putting immense pressure on the net. But goalie Bay Stoker was up to that challenge, recording 24 saves to keep his team from a bigger deficit.
Still, WG had enough on this night. Adam Mazzoni and Brian Donahue each came up with three-goal hat tricks, with Mazzoni adding two assists.
Mike Fetterly stepped up, matching Ryan Barber with two goals and one assist, as Collin Donahue had a goal and two assists and Tim Desko also found the net. John Galloway earned 13 saves in his net time.
It will be much warmer Friday night, at Henninger, where the state Class A top-ranked Wildcats will look to improve to 9-0.
