John Amos, well-known star of television and screen performs in Halley’s Comet, a one man show, at 8 p.m. Saturday, April 4. Amos has starred in big screen movies including “Die Hard 2”, “Coming to America” and the 1970s television sitcom “Good Times”. He was also prominently featured in “The West Wing”.
“Halley’s Comet” is an original stage play written and performed by Amos. He portrays an old man who goes back to the site where he first witnessed the beauty of Halley’s Comet as a young boy of 11, telling his old friend, the Comet, that “things sure have changed since the last time you passed this way.” His performance is truly incredible as he takes the audience on a whirlwind adventure through time, transforming himself into a parade of characters: the enchanting 87-year-old universal patriarch, a tough young man in the middle of a blood chilling WWII battle in the Pacific and a newly freed Liberian slave who heads out West as a cattle driver.

Theater will continue at the Palace Theater with collegiate theater performed by the Colgate Students presenting “Peter Pan” March 26 through 28, “The Pajama Game” April 9 through 11 and “Ballard vs. State” April 1 through 2. The family series continues with the presentation of “The Lorax” April 18 at 3 p.m., “Compost Theater” April 18 at 7 p.m. and “Mark Twain” on May 2 at 3 p.m. All of these shows are free except for “Mark Twain” with a cost of $5.
“Every show has either sold out or come close to selling out. Our reputation for presenting great national acts is growing,” said Patricia von Mechow, Director of the Palace Theater. Von Mechow is preparing for their third season. “I’m booking for 2009-2010 and hope to have our line-up ready by the end of April. It’s thrilling,” she said.
