ONONDAGA COUNTY – Again, the Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool girls tennis teams find themselves at the conclusion of a regular season, with some of them moving on for Section III tournament action in October.
In particular, C-NS is part of the sectional Class A team tournament as a no. 7 seed, meeting no. 2 seed Auburn in the quarterfinals with the winner to get Baldwinsville or Central Square in the semifinals.
The Northstars were back in action last Tuesday afternoon, against Auburn, and as it has done before it leaned heavily on its doubles teams to get a victory as it edged the Maroons 4-3.
Megan Mieves and Lily Misco got it going with a 7-5, 6-2 win over Audrey Carr and Madison Fredericksen, with Mackenzie Prentice and Kat McRobbie-Taru turning back Samantha Carr and Alice Caruso 6-2, 6-4.
A third point came when Jalia Killingbeck and Andrea Iqbal won in straight sets, and it was clinched when Addyon Fedel and Lauren Majec earned a 6-3, 7-5 decision over Olivia Schwab and Sadie Morin.
Things turned against Baldwinsville two days later, the Northstars taking a 5-2 defeat to the Bees, who swept through the singles as only Maddie Frisch earned games, but fell to Ella Clary 6-2, 6-0.
Points in doubles came when Mieves and Misco won in straight sets over Carmela Budzich and Lainey Nesbitt 7-5, 6-3, with Iqbal and Killingbeck blanked in the first set, but rallying past Laine Zoanetti and Layla Trendowski 0-6, 6-1, 6-3. Another three-set battle had McRobbie-Taru and Prentice falling to Jasmine Rowda and Livia Zoanetti 4-6, 6-1, 7-5.
Liverpool got just a single point in last Monday’s 6-1 defeat to West Genesee, again having Angelica Underwood as a standout in a 6-1, 6-1 romp over Kailyn Drury.
But Lydia Breckheimer and Hailey Jaquin both lost in two sets, and it was the same in doubles, the teams of Allie Kerneklian-Olivia Magnarelli, Christy Bui-Ashley Morgans, Chloe Musengo-Jaspreet Purewal and Kamry Scanna-Isabella Truck all taking straight-set defeats.
But the Warriors did turn around a day later and shut out Henninger 7-0. Underwood, Magnarelli and Kerneklian did not drop a point in any of their singles matches, while in doubles Bui and Purewal paired for a 6-0, 6-3 win over Hana Mehic and Ayla Pehlic as Jaquin and Alyssa Henderson beat Parisa Ozbek and Reedima Thapa by those same scores.
It was the same Wednesday in a 6-1 loss to unbeaten Fayetteville-Manlius, Underwood beating Trisha Adavikolanu 6-1, 6-4, but the Hornets not dropping more than two games in any set of any other match.
Liverpool also had just one point from Friday’s match with B’ville, a 6-1 defeat where Underwood, paired with Magnarelli in doubles, turned back Lainey Nesbitt and Carmela Budzich 6-2, 6-0, but the Bees won every other match in two sets.
