CENTRAL NEW YORK – Zack Walma’s hat trick on Sept. 16 had helped the Christian Brothers Academy boys soccer team hold off reigning state Class B champion Skaneateles 3-2 on Sept. 16 and kept the Brothers undefeated.
Having moved up to no. 3 in the latest state Class AA rankings, the Brothers would continue to challenge itself and, last Friday, get shut out for the first time this season when it met state Class A no. 4-ranked Westhill.
Still, it ended in a 0-0 draw because CBA’s defense was just as good, denying the Warriors through 80 minutes of regulation and 20 minutes of overtime as goalkeeper Ryan Petrie recorded seven saves.
Like seven previous opponents, the Brothers could not solve a great Westhill defense and only managed five total shots, all stopped by Charlie DeMore.
Manlius Pebble Hill bounced back from a Sept. 15 defeat to Bishop Ludden by turning around last Tuesday and knocking off Bishop Grimes 4-1.
The state Class D no. 14-ranked Trojans bolted out to a 4-0 edge by halftime as Nick Lurvey achieved the natural hat trick, netting three goals as Sam Lurvey got the other. Connor Gardner and Jacob Temes had assist.
A day earlier, Grimes took a 2-0 defeat to Solvay. Ryan Millay was strong in goal, earning 10 saves, but the Bearcats controlled the flow of play and got two goals from Arkadil Ososkalo, one in each half.
MPH fought hard Thursday in a 1-0 win over Mater Dei Academy. Andy Luvey’s goal, assisted by Nick Lurvey, proved enough, but the Trojans’ defense did a heavy portion of the week, denying a host of Mater Dei chances as Abe Salomon was superb, recording 12 saves.
Grimes, meanwhile, got on the board at Fabius-Pompey, yet still lost to the Falcons 4-1. A first-half Cobras goal did not keep F-P from drawing clear, led by Grayson Wallace’s two goals and one assist.
And when the Falcons turned its attention to MPH on Saturday, the Trojans found out just how good the Falcons were, kept off the board in a 3-0 defeat.
They were scoreless until the second half, where, overcoming Liam Allen’s six saves, F-P’s Jayden Kwasniewski scored twice and assisted on Quinlan Yard’s goal, dropping MPH to 6-2 overall.
By that same 3-0 margin, Grimes lost Saturday to Mater Dei Academy. Javier Llamas, Adam Edwards and Nick Edwards scored for Mater Dei as Edwards, Matthew Burns and Josh Llamas had one assist apiece.
