Unbeaten against CNY Counties League foes this winter, the Baldwinsville wrestling team maintained that perfect mark in last Wednesday’s meet against Central Square, needing a late surge to secure a 42-25 victory over the Red Hawks.
On its home mat, the Bees won the 171-pound opener as Patrick Nasoni pinned Steve Guerin in 1:22 but watched as Brian Honsinger (189 pounds) and Lucian Earle (215 pounds) suffered falls in the next two matches, giving Central Square a 12-6 lead.
Quickly, the Bees went back in front thanks to Tim Sposato (103 pounds) pinning Ben Mayers late in the second period and Joey Shaheen, at 112 pounds, toppling Ryan Lamson 9-4.
The Red Hawks hung in there, sandwiching three wins, including a close 6-4 Antonio Peck loss to Brandon Burghart at 140 pounds, in between two B’ville pins. John Herholzer (125 pounds) finished off James Williams in 3:26, while Anthony Finocchiaro, moved up to 130 pounds, still got a 51-second pin over Chris Bourassa.
With the outcome still in doubt, Kurt McArdell, at 145 pounds, put the Bees back in control, handling Josh Pratt 11-4. Joe Senf (152 pounds) then clinched the meet with his second-period pin over Avery Sigle before Auggie Zona (160 pounds) got a pin over Steve Guerin in 1:27.
B’ville would go to Dolgeville High School on Tuesday and Wednesday for the Mountain Duals, then turn around and start 2010 with an appearance at Saturday’s General Brown Dual Meet in Dexter. This will give the Bees the chance to compete against wrestlers from more than 20 different teams before the week is done.
