CENTRAL NEW YORK – What was supposed to be one of the busier weeks of the season for the Fayetteville-Manlius and East Syracuse Minoa field hockey teams got curtailed a bit.
Heavy rain and thunderstorms hit early last Monday evening, postponing the Hornets’ game with Baldwinsville for a week and halting the Spartans’ match with Liverpool at halftime when the Warriors were up 1-0.
Things were clear on Wednesday, though, and each side was victorious.
F-M romped past Weedsport 6-0, Sarah Porter’s three assists the anchor of a well-balanced attack. Audrey Burke scored twice, with single goals going to Natalie Rameas, Carine Smith, Ella Herber and Madison Kirkpatrick as Rameas and Smith also earned assists.
This happened as ESM was putting away Auburn 4-1 to move above the .500 mark at 4-3-1 at its midway point of the regular season.
Scoring one goal in each quarter, the Spartans saw Natalie Shields and Adrianna Fernandez each pick up one goal and one assist. Reiley Murphy and Sarah Stadelman also converted, with Cassidy Scheftic and Mary Grace Godleski picking up assists.
They both played again on Friday night, with wildly varying results.
F-M’s 2-1 home win over Cazenovia included a mid-game surge where Porter and Smith each netted goals for a 2-0 advantage and the Hornets held on from there, despite a late Lakers tally from Hannah Adams.
This happened as ESM ran into a Baldwinsville side steaming from back-to-back defeats to Cicero-North Syracuse and Rome Free Academy and lost, 7-0, to the Bees.
Despite eight saves from Mollie Comstock, ESM had a difficult time, B’ville netting at least one goal in each quarter as Bridget Roy, Julia Schultz and Erin Gee would each convert twice.
