ONONDAGA COUNTY – Again with a small roster for the 2022 season, the Baldwinsville girls swim team was determined to maintain itself in the face of opposition with deeper lineups.
The Bees began on Sept. 1, hosting Cicero-North Syracuse, and got two wins apiece from Eva Smith and Henna Luke despite falling to the Northsars 55-39.
Smith was impressive in the 200-yard individual medley, her time of two minutes, 17.93 setting an early Section III standard for the season, and then she dazzled in the 100 backstroke, going 1:04.24.
As for Luke, she went 2:19 flat to win the 200 freestyle over C-NS’s Ella Lawrence (2:27.30) and returned, in the long 500 freestyle, to win that race in 6:21.94.
Beaten in two of the relays, B’ville would take the closing 400 freestyle relay as Smith, Gwendolen Matt, Mia Rinko and Addison Grosso finished in 4:17.96.
B’ville’s next meet was against Fayetteville-Manlius Friday at the Cavalry Club, with the Bees making some inroads in the course of a 100-72 loss to the Hornets.
Smith would switch to the 500 freestyle and roar to a time of 5:12.32, also swimming the 100 breaststroke and finishing in 1:15.80 ahead of Mia Rinko’s 1:20.96.
Makenna Williams equaled F-M’s Gabby Dardis in the 200 individual medley, each finishing in 2:34.72 as the Bees would have a three-team with Oswego and host Skaneateles early this week.
