CENTRAL NEW YORK – Over the course of two days early this week, area high school boys and girls golf teams took part in their respective Section III tournaments.
Unbeaten in the regular season, Marcellus followed it up by dominating the sectional West spring tournament held last Monday at the Pompey Club, the Mustangs’ team score of 429 well clear of second-place Manlius-Pebble Hill’s 508 in the large-school division.
Individually, Johnny White matched par with a 72 to beat out teammate Will Glass (77) for the individual title. White, Glass and Ben Reome, who shot 90, all advanced to the state qualifier later in the week at Skenandoa Golf Club.
In the small-school division, it was Bishop Ludden scoring a lopsided victory of its own, netting a team score of 472 as Bishop Grimes (566) was well back in second place.
Matt Knechtle and Andrew Towsley led the Gaelic Knights, both shooting 90. They advanced to the state qualifier, as did Solvay golfer Anthony D’Agostino with a 90 of his own.
A day later, it was the girls golf Section III championships at Kanon Valley, where Westhill finished third in the small-school division with a 433 as Christian Brothers Academy (405) beat New Hartford (415) for the top spot.
However, the Warriors’ Catherine Dadey, by shooting a 94 and finishing in a tie for sixth, qualified for this weekend’s New York State Public High School Athletic Association championships at McGregor Links in Wilton, near Saratoga.
Charlotte Roth shot a 107 for Westhill as Maya Wollen finished with a 114, Bella Jones had 118 and Hannah Johnson picked up a 120.
Marcellus was sixth in the team standings with 480 as Allie Coombs led the Mustangs with a 103 that tied West Genesee freshman Sophia Simiele for 26th place. Miranda Stewart posted 118 ahead of a 127 from Evie Formoza and 132 from Ella Formoza. Skaneateles golfer Lili Winkelman earned a 121.
When the sectional boys golf state qualifier began on Wednesday at Skenandoa Golf Club in Clinton, Westhill golfer Anthony Maglisco led after one round with a 74, one stroke ahead of New Hartford’s Cam Jenkins.
Two other Warriors, Dan Young and Aidan Ryan (81 each), made the cut for Friday’s final round on the number as Sknaeateles had Jack Marquardt advance thanks to his 79.
