CENTRAL NEW YORK – Area high school boys tennis teams tried to fit in as many matches as possible before the Section III team tournaments got underway this week.
Christian Brothers Academy had, by far, the biggest win of anyone last week when it took on OHSL Liberty division leader Skaneateles and knocked off the Lakers 4-1.
Sweeping the singles, the Brothers saw Chanu Yang rout Max Karpinski 6-1, 6-1, with Gabriel Yang beating Marty McNeil by those same scores and Soren Kang handling Jake Salzhauer 6-2, 6-4.
Fabrizio Arezzo and Finn Doyle lost in doubles 7-6 (7-4), 1-6, 6-3 to Hatcher Gutchess and Marcus McClanahan, but John Engle and Will Vandemeer got a 6-3, 6-1 win over Ethan Pickup and Nick Cerimeli.
Before this, CBA roared past Pulaski 5-0 last Monday to improve to 6-1 overall. Gabriel Yang got past Austin Dufrane 6-0, 6-4, but Kang and Chanu Yang not drop a game in their singles matches as, in doubles, Arezzo and Doyle won 6-4, 6-0 over Brian Pond and Caiden Potter.
A 5-0 shutout of LaFayette followed a day later, with Kang and Chanu Yang surrendering just one game apiece and Gabriel Yang blanking Jenna Reese 6-0, 6-0. Between them, the doubles teams of Arezzo-Doyle and Engle-Vandemeer lost just one game in four sets.
Earlier in the week, East Syracuse Minoa returned to the win column, battling past Central Square 4-3 as, in singles, Jack Satterlee beat Shaun Saunders 6-1, 6-4 and Noah Satterlee got past Lance Bardoun 6-2, 6-1.
Jayce Domres and Josh Spilka lost 4-6, 6-4, 7-5 to Michael Schaap and Owen Peck, but carter Jacobs and Ari Oviedo won 6-3, 6-4 over Akira Kuratate. Jacob Harmon and Donovan Randall beat Alessandro Preziosa and Jude Padgett 6-3, 6-1.
A pair of matches against Auburn on Wednesday both went in the Maroons’ favor, though one of them was a 4-3 decision where Noah Satterlee, Krish Patel and the doubles team of Randall and Jayce Domres each won single-set matches to 10 games.
But ESM did beat Cortland 4-3 on Thursday, helped by two forfeits but also getting straight-set doubles wins from the Satterlee brothers, along with Domres and Randall.
Manlius-Pebble Hill prevailed last Tuesday over Phoenix 5-0, maintaining the shutout when Joh Howard, in third singles, went through a third-set tie-breaker but beat Cayden McKay 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4).
Anthony Pitts and Alex Fung easily claimed singles points as Matt Roberson and Deven Trikka rallied in doubles to top Ethan Bruno and Dylan Jones 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 as Kevin Fratositanu and Abe Salomon won in two sets.
In Wednesday’s 3-2 loss to Chittenango, Pitts and Fung won their singles matches giving up just one game in four sets, and Joh Howard was a set away from the clinching point before falling 4-6, 6-0, 6-1 to Seth Boulter.
Yet another 3-2 defeat followed on Thursday, this one to Marcellus. Pitts blanked Matt Vitale 6-0, 6-0, while Fung rallied past Tucker Guerina 4-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), but a clinching point proved elusive as Fratositanu and Salomon could not hold a lead in a 4-6, 6-0, 6-3 defeat to Dan Fox and Chris Barbaro.
