ONONDAGA COUNTY – In order to fit in all of its remaining regular-season matches, the Baldwinsville boys tennis team would play five times in span of six days, culminating in another showdown with first-place Fayetteville-Manlius.
It all began last Monday with B’ville’s 7-0 shutout over West Genesee where Antonio Marsallo and Mason Doan both won 6-0, 6-0 singles matches over, respectively, Sam Barth and Ian Palmieri, while Logan Bolton put away Nate Ruston 6-3, 6-0.
Max Funicello and Nick Licciardello handled Noah Ruston and Joe Paoli 6-2, 6-2 as the teams of Connor Tutor-Andrew Jung, Zach Treichler-Aidan Delaney and Cameron Dougherty-Tyler Blum dropped just three games in six combined setes.
After the lone off day in the sequence, B’ville took out Central Square 7-0 on Wednesday afternoon, again having Marsallo and Doan earn shutouts. Bolton controlled his 6-2, 6-2 match with the Redhawks’ Jude Padgett.
In doubles, Aidan Stan and Colin Savage beat Lance Bardoun and Alessandro Preziosa 6-2 6-2, with Ashton Taylor and Zach Pendergast beating Andrew Beardsley and Akira Kuratate by those same scores. Funicello-Licciardello and Tutor-Jung also won in two sets.
Now came back-to-back matches with Liverpool, starting Thursday with the Bees blanking the Warriors 7-0 sparked by a singles sweep from Marsallo, Doan and Bolton, with only Bolton giving up games in a 6-2, 6-1 win over Anthony Ranieri.
Delaney and Pendergast were pushed in the second set, but still handled Andrew Caimano and Aidan Hunter 6-0, 6-4 as the teams of Jung-Tutor and Aidan Stan-Colin Savage both got shutouts, with Funicello and Licciardello handling James Welch and William Balduf 6-1, 6-0.
In Friday’s rematch, it was much the same, B’ville handling Liverpool in another 7-0 shutout to set up the Saturday showdown with F-M, where the Bees were quite competitive, even though the Hornets prevailed 6-1.
Tyler Blum’s 6-4, 6-3 singles win over Colin Byer provided the only point, with Doan falling to David Fernando 6-0, 6-1 as Bolton ran into Cameron Lukasik and took a 6-0, 6-0 defeat.
One doubles match went to three sets, with Funicello and Licciardello two games from victory, yet falling to Jaden Duggal and Davin Woolridge 7-5, 4-6, 6-4.
Dougherty and Stan paired up in a 6-0, 7-5 loss to Anay Dalal and Justin Zheng, with Tutor and Jung not able to take a close first set in a 7-5, 6-0 defeat to Fergus Brady and Andrew Li. Delaney and Treichler lost to Gene Balian and Dan Manta 6-2, 6-1.
