Robert Raymond Sherburne, 81, of Wilmington, NC, passed away on March 10, 2022. Robert was born on Jan. 30, 1941, to Raymond Sherburne and Frances Silvernail Sherburne in Butternuts, N.Y. After graduating from Morrisville Eaton Central School in 1958, he went on to earn a degree in education at SUNY Albany. He later earned a master’s degree from Colgate University and CAS for educational administration.
Bob was a beloved teacher for many years at Cazenovia Central School, where he went on to become director of curriculum and instruction. He was very active in the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers, and served as president in 1979. Bob also taught education administration at SUNY Cortland. Bob was also regional director for the NYS Education Department’s Effective Schools Consortium Network. He culminated his career as assistant xuperintendent for Onondaga Cortland Madison BOCES. Throughout his career, Bob was a visionary educator who maintained connections with students and colleagues long after retirement.
Bob retired in 1996 and later moved to Delray Beach, FL, where he was active in the Rainberry Bay community, serving on the board of directors, running the Bridge Club, teaching bridge and volunteering in the library. He maintained a vast network of friendships and will be remembered for his unique talent for human connection and service to others.
Bob was predeceased by his parents, Ray and Frances, and special friend Trent Walker. He is survived by his daughter Jenny Sherburne Lewis, (Jack Lewis), of Taos, NM, son John (Carrie Moock Sherburne), of Wilmington, NC, grandchildren Amy Lewis, David Lewis and Devon Sherburne, sister Shirley Sherburne Zimmer (Art Zimmer) of Hamilton, NY and former wife and mother of his children, Judith Hunt.
