Rebecca Shiroff, the top Republican vote-getter last year’s Manlius Town Board election, announced her candidacy for the New York State Assembly last week.
Shiroff would face Democrat Al Stirpe, who was first elected in 2006 and has represented the 127th Assembly District for seven terms. The district includes the towns of Clay, Cicero, Manlius and Cazenovia.
Shiroff has been an outspoken critic of the state’s mask mandate for children in schools. She recently penned an opinion piece for the Post-Standard arguing that the state’s policy on masks in schools has ignored the mental health ramifications for children. She has also been critical of the bail reform policies that New York has adopted in recent years.
“In Albany, I’ll fight back against dangerous policies like bail reform that are threatening the safety of our communities; we all deserve to feel safe again in our own homes and neighborhoods,” Shiroff said. “Our children’s future, educational opportunities and affordability are paramount. We need to get partisan politics out of the classroom and focus on preparing our kids to enter a competitive workforce, whether through a college education or training in the trades.”
Professionally, Shiroff works as a program analyst with the Onondaga County Office of Economic Development. Previously, her family were part-owners of Metro Mattress, a retail franchise that expanded to more than 50 locations across upstate New York.
She also served as campaign manager for Republican Angi Renna’s campaign against state Sen. John Mannion in the 2020 election.
