SYRACUSE – In two Section III championship meets three days apart, a trio of area indoor track and field teams each earned their own victories and enjoyed top-level performances.
West Genesee went first, in last Wednesday’s sectional Class AA meet, where it finished fourth with 58 points in the boys standings, nearly half of it from its work in relays.
Peter McMahon won the first boys race of the night when he zoomed through 3,200 meters in nine minutes, 30.32 seconds, more than 21 seconds ahead of the field.
Dom Burris prevailed in the long jump, going 20 feet 11 ½ inches, while in the 55-meter dash Burris, with 6.72 seconds, was runner-up to Baldwinsville’s Sam Mellinger (6.57).
Also, McMahon joined Aidan Walsh, Kevin Moser and Casey Comny to take the 4×800 relay in 8:33.42 to the 8:38.16 from Fayetteville-Manlius.
In the 4×200 relay, Burris, Bryce Bort, Payton Manipole and Chris Moser win in 1:33.95 to the 1:34.89 from team champion Baldwinsville. Bort, Manipole, Moser and Anthony Edgar were second in the 4×400 relay in 3:39.69.
On the girls side, the Wildcats’ Alexis Rydelek had a second-place shot put throw of 28’11 1/2” and was fourth in the weight throw with 30’1 1/4”. WG also wasfourth in the 4×800 relay in 10:31.74 and fifth in both the 4×400 and 4×200.
Then, after weather delayed things for a couple of days, the Class B-2 sectional meet took place last Saturday, with Skaneateles and Jordan-Elbridge both earning victories of their own.
In fact, the Lakers had matching third-place finishes and earned 54 points on each side, the girls featuring, again, Kyla Palmer, who with her three wins accounted for more than half her team’s point.
Having the school record in the 300, Palmer tore to a top time of 41.51 seconds in that event after she had already won the 600 in 1:45.51, in each race more than three seconds ahead of the field.
Then, in the 4×200, Palmer paired with Rory Comer, Grace Conan and Annabel Wells to go 1:54.96 and win that race, too, with J-E earning third place in 2:01.80.
Cate Comer got third place in the 1,000 in 3:26.35,with Rory Comer fourth in the 55 sprint in 8.04 seconds and fifth in the long jump. Also, the Lakers were third in the 4×400 relay in 4:44.02.
Alex Moro won for the Skaneateles boys in the pole vault, clearing 10’6” as no one else could break the 10-foot mark. And Jack Holst won the weight throw with a top toss of 42’5”, nearly five feet clear of anyone else.
Jack Phillips ran the 600 in 1:28.59, just behind the 1:26.91 from Cazenovia’s Cassidy Gilmore, and added a second in the 300 in 38.72 seconds.
In the 4×800, Nolan Grtyzlo, Will Girzadas, Mike Gelbato and Ethan Goldberger were second in 9:35.58. Gryzlo took third in the 1,000 in 2:56.94, with Girzadas fourth (4:57.51) in the 1,600-meter run.
J-E’s girls earned 35 points as Vassianna Klock was victorious in the 1,500-meter run in 4:51.73, more than half a minute clear of any of her challengers.
Coral Uhle took fourth in the 600 in 1:51.53 as Kyra Dominick was fifth in the 55 sprint in 8.16 seconds. Teagan Disinger was sixth in the 55 hurdles.
Tatianna Parkolap cleared 4’10” in the high jump for fourth place. Klock, Uhle, Olivia Bennett and Ella Jewsbury were second in the 4×800 in 11:01.61 as Skaneateles (11:27.82) was third.
Peyton Bates was third for J-E in the boys 3,200 in 11:10.87, with Alex Kunz third in the 1,600 in 4:57.09 and the Eagles third in the 4×200 in 1:52.93.
