CENTRAL NEW YORK – Not only did the Westhill indoor track and field team serve as a host for the Dec. 23 invitational meet at SRC Arena, it managed to win three different girls races.
Angie Mesa, in a time of 7.63 seconds, beat out PSLA Fowler’s Anoveah Housley (7.70) in the 55-meter dash. Ashley Bolesh went 1:36.68 in the 600-meter run to beat out, among others, Skaneateles junior Kyla Palmer, who took third place in 1:39.42 after her sixth in the 55 sprint.
And the Warriors dominated the 4×200 relay, where Mesa, Bolesh, Kate Bendall and Elle Herrera went 1:48.14 to easily clear the second-place 1:52.92 from Liverpool. Herrera was third in the 55 hurdles in 9.88 seconds, while Bendall had a fourth-place long jump of 14’4 3/4”.
Colleen Patrie got fifth in the weight throw with 24’8” and tied for seventh in the shot put with 24’4”. Kaelin Feliu was eighth in the pole vault. Abby Cottrell tied for seventh in the high jump.Ava Baty tied for seventh in the triple jump, going 30 feet.
For the Westhill boys, Brandon Mulholland ran 1,600 meters in 4:41.86, good for second place, but far from the winning 4:25.15 by Liverpool’s Ryan Hagan. Drew O’Reilly took fourth in the 1,000 with 2:48.70, while Skaneateles’ Will Girzadas (2:51.05) was seventh.
Jon Gratien got to third place in the triple jump with a best attempt of 36’8 1/2”as teammate Ben Greeson (36’1”) gained fifth place, Gratien also helping the Warriors take fifth (1:41.46) in its 4×200. Brian Kenny was sixth in the 600 in 1:30.96 and Evan Frost seventh in the 55 sprint.
Carter Buckman, clearing 10 feet, was third in the pole vault to go with a ninth in the 55 hurdles as Skaneateles’ Alex Moro (8’6”) was sixth in the pole vault. Shamus Edlund took seventh (32’5 3/4”) in the shot put as Josh Dabbiero was ninth in the long jump.
West Genesee did not compete in this event, but did go to Wednesday’s Utica Challenge at Utica College, where on the boys side Dom Burris and Peter McMahon both earned victories.
Having already claimed the 55 sprint in 6.84 seconds to the 6.86 from Westmoreland’s Caleb Miller, Burris went to the 4×200, joining Bryce Bort, Chris Moser and Kev Scott as the Wildcats put up a time of 1:35.13 to beat out Baldwinsville’s second-place 1:35.65.
McMahon, for his part, won the very first race on the card, covering 3,200 meters in 9:42.20 as no other runner even broke the 10-minute mark, Saratoga Springs’ Mason Talarico second in 10:01.85.
Bort, Chris Moser, Kevin Moser and Anthony Edgar were second in the 4×400 in 3:38.02. Then Kevin Moser made it to third place in the 500-meter run in 1:14.92, with Casey Comny fifth in 1:17.07 to go with a fifth in the 800-meter run in 2:16.57.
In the girls meet at Utica, Palmer swept both sprints for Skaneateles, her time of 7.73 seconds best in the 55-meter dash . Then, in the 300, Palmer’s 41.20 seconds more than three seconds ahead of the 44.21 from Liverpool’s Mia Wright. The Lakers’ Cate Comer was eighth in the 600.
WG’s Natalie Kieling was fourth in the 55 sprint in 7.83 seconds. Vivian Youmans had a fifth-place weight throw of 33’7” as the Wildcats were fourth in the 4×400 in 4:42.04.
Also for the Wildcats, Andrea Conklin finished sixth in the 500 in 1:30.30, with Peyton Long eighth in 1:33.62. Rachael Reynolds got sixth in the 55 hurdles in 10.52 seconds, with Zoe Maupin seventh in the 1,500 and Claire Griffin eighth in the 1,000.
