CENTRAL NEW YORK – Though many area indoor track and field athletes rested during the holidays, Cicero-North Syracuse and Liverpool would both have starring roles in two different meets.
And it included some record-breaking performances during Wednesday’s Utica Invitational at Utica College from the Northstars’ Hannah Boyle and the Warriors’ Jalen Graham.
In the girls 800-meter run, Boyle’s time of two minutes, 13.10 seconds set a new Section III record, right before she won the 500-meter run in 1:20.37.
Over in the boys weight throw, Graham’s top toss of 63 feet 2 inches shattered the previous meet record and was more than 15 feet ahead of the nearest competitor as he also took third place (42’4”) in the shot put.
C-NS’s girls were victorious at the meet with 93 points, with Katy Harbold first in the 1,000-meter run in 3:09.56 as she joined Sophia Graham, Marissa Navarra and Cameron Sisk to win the 4×800 relay in 10:15.48, with Liverpool third.
Navarra took third in the 1,500-meter run in 4:59.31, with Grace Murray third in the 55 hurdles in 10.05 seconds before she helped Ava Giannuzzi, Eva Farone and Ava Schiff win the 4×200 relay in 1:55.19, edging Rome Free Academy (1:55.23) for the top spot.
Lilly Capria, clearing 5 feet in the long jump, made it to second place as she was also third in the triple jump with 34’7”.
Liverpool’s boys had Ryan Hagan beat the field in the 1,600-meter run, his time of 4:23.57 more than 13 seconds ahead of anyone else. Jacob Makhlouf took fourth in the 3,200-meter run and helped the Warriors finish third in the 4×800 as Daunte Wright was fourth (35’1 1/4”) in the triple jump.
As for the Liverpool girls, Lena Young, Kaitlyn Burt, Ashlyn Brown and Sophie Hoy were second in the 4×400 relay in 4:33.04. Mia Wright got second in the 300-meter dash in 44.21 second as Kaleigh Buck was fourth in the 1,000 and Beatrize Gugol fifth in the 55 hurdles.
C-NS had Gavin McAllister clear 10’6” for second place in the pole vault. Dante Melfi took third in the 600-meter run in 1:32.12 and James McConnell was fourth in the 300. Trevon Walker got fifth in the long jump.
Plenty of wins were also piled up by area athletes at SRC Arena when the Westhill Invitational took place Dec. 23.
In 2:31.55, Hagan beat the field in the 1,000. Then, in the 1,600, Hagan roared to victory in 4:25.15, more than 16 seconds ahead of the field. Graham’s weight throw of 60’5”also produced a first-place finish.
Also for the Warriors, Bennett Robb was victorious in the high jump, clearing 5’6” with fewer misses than three rivals, while Walker won the triple jump by going 38’3 1/4”.
C-NS’s girls went 1-2-3 in the 1,000-meter run as Kate Putman tore to a top time of 2:58.05, well clear of seventh-grader Graham’s second-place 3:09.08 as she edged Navarra (3:09.64).
Capria beat the field in the high jump, the only competitor to clear 5 feet as no one else topped 4’10”. Murray, in 33′ 3/4”, beat out Gianna Boland (32’5 1/4”) for second place in the triple jump.
Danielle Crivelli was second in the 55 hurdles in 9.87 seconds and second in the long jump with 15′ 3/4”, with Jasmine Ayre (9.91) fourth in the hurdles as Liverpool’s Anaharie Anderson was fifth and Gugol sixth to go with her fourth (31’6 1/4”) in the triple jump.
Harbold made it to third place in the 1,500-meter run in 5:07.92, while Marissa Doty took fourth and Gabby Putman fifth in the 600-meter run. Shae Marryah Williams was fourth in the weight throw.
Carlton Garnes got third place in the 55-meter dash in 6.92 seconds and fourth (19’7 1/4”) in the long jump. Melfi got fourth place in the 1,600 as Sean Graves was fifth in the 55 hurdles, with McAllister fifth in the pole vault.
Liverpool’s girls nearly won the 4×200 relay as Wright, Sophia Jarosz, Anaharie Anderson, and Cailtyn Guilfoil and Mia Wright went 1:52.92 to beat C-NS’s third-place 1:53.38 but trail the winning 1:48.14 from Westhill. Jarosz was fourth in the 55 sprint in 7.79 seconds/
