HAMILTON – The Cazenovia girls indoor track team achieved another impressive win last Tuesday as it scored 114 points to outrun Clinton (80) and nine other schools during the DiMao Invitational at Colgate University, the Lakers winning seven of 14 events and scoring some points in all 14.
The girls were especially dominant on the track as it finished first in five out of eight events with wins in the sprints, hurdles, middle distance and distance events.
They led off the meet with a strong showing in the 1,500 meters, taking three of the top five places. Olivia Wong (second, 5:31.26) and Nadia Segall (third, 5:45.55) combined to take first place as a team in the relay-style scoring that combines each team’s top two finishers.
The Lakers were equally successful in the 4×200 meter relay as Katie Whitney (28.3 seconds) anchored the team of Melanie Michael, Caryn Gagnon and Jane Lee to victory in 1:58.55.
Whitney (6.80 seconds) returned to partner with Corinne Albicker for first in the 45-meter dash. Michael (8.78 seconds) and Gagnon (9.20) dominated the 50-meter hurdles as they finished 1-2 individually to easily win as a relay.
Michael also anchored the 4×400 relay team of Bonnie Pittman, Cady Webb and Zoey Gagne to a third place finish in 4:50.95.
The Lakers were also strong in the middle distance as they won the 500-meter event with Mary Williams (second in 1:26.96) and Claire Braaten (third, 1:29.02) teaming up for the victory.
Williams and Braaten led off Cazenovia’s winning distance medley relay as they were joined by Wong and Dinah Gifford to place first in 14:29.75. Faith Wheeler (2:38.12) and Nadia Segall (2:38.26) finished 2-3 in the 800-meter run to easily post the best combined score for first in that event.
Susie Pittman led the Lakers in the field events again as she tied for first in the high jump at 4 feet 10 inches to partner with Katie Pavelchak (4’8”) for first as a relay. She also had the Lakers’ top pole vault effort, clearing 7 feet to combine with Faith Wheeler (6’6”) for second place.
Corinne Albicker was also a double scorer, taking second individually in the long jump at 14’9 ¼” and combining with Emmi Rightmyre for first as a team. She also contributed to a second place team finish in the triple jump as she supported Kylie Anthony who led the team with a season-best 30’2”
Kenzie Halliday had the team’s best weight throw at 21’10 ½” as she partnered with Danielle Smith for fourth as a team. Smith led the way in the shot at 22’ ½” to combine with Halliday for first in that event as well.
