CENTRAL NEW YORK – Each year when the month of October rolls around, it means that the Marcellus and Westhill girls soccer teams are set to collide for important stakes.
It just so happens that, in 2021, the Mustangs and Warriors will meet twice this month, starting on Saturday afternoon in Marcellus with a rematch set for Oct. 14 at Westhill.
Of course, each side had to go through plenty of other games first, mostly finding success but not as dominant as some of the sides these two great programs have produced.
Fresh from going 0-1-1 against Baldwinsville and Cicero-North Syracuse in games played at Oneonta’s Wright National Soccer Complex on Sept. 18-19, Westhill played Chittenango last Tuesday and bashed the Bears 5-0.
Five different Warriors – Elle Herrera, Ashley Bolesh, Sarah Balduzzi, Jules Bleskoski and Molly Dorfman – earned the five goals. Liv Holowinski put up two assists as single assists went to Maya Wollen.
Marcellus visited Cazenovia that same night and steadily got away from the Lakers, earning a 4-1 victory.
A pair of early tallies negated Julia Reff’s goal and had the Mustangs in front 2-1 going into halftime, and it extended that margin late with a well-balanced attack.
Brielle McShane and Jadyn Baker each got one goal and one assist. Annalise Bird and Emma Roseboom also scored, with Katie MacLachlan picking up an assist. Josephine Leubner stopped eight of the nine shots she faced.
Skaneateles got its turn against Cazenovia last Friday night at the Sean Googin Sports Complex and, with a well-balanced attack, won this Laker duel by a score of 3-1.
Rendering the lone first-half goal, Skaneateles doubled that margin in the latter stages as Maeve McNeil, Ella Bobbett and Paige Willard each scored, with Willard adding an assist.
This followed a game against Mexico last Tuesday where Skaneateles blanked the Tigers 2-0. McNeil and Kathryn Morrissey earned second-half goals after neither side converted in the first half, with Isabella Arroyo assisting on both of them. Emily Evans stopped all six of Mexico’s shots.
